Thinking about
Hoping to revive the ceremony of it all once the writing is over.
A nice cuppa with homemade cake, wonder which tea was in the cup that day?!
A joyful 15 minute break on a busy day!

My very first business commission way back at the turn of the millenium was to dye the blackwork embroidery threads for the pillows on The Great Bed of Ware in the V & A museum. The New British Galleries were about to open and this was the main feature.
The embroidery itself was carried out by a team of ladies down in Leominster, but I had to also make the tassels for the corners of the pillows. (sorry no detailed photos although there are many on the internet of the Great Bed of Ware in its clothing)
The bed hangings were dyed by 2 other people - the reds by Eva Lambert on the Isle of Skye, the yellows by Simon Chadwick who was at Styal Mill, (I assume he would have dyed the greens too, although I'm not sure) I remember that all the weld for the yellow was picked in and around York, because weld from "that side of the country gives better colour that on the West!" - so Manchester weld was not considered good enough! (quote from Charles Kightly, the commissioner!)
I loved being a part of that work and it set me on a fascinating path as a Medieval Dyer.

Those who know me well will know that I have a "thing" about wearing gloves. You should ALWAYS wear them when working with natural dyes and mordants.

When working with "tenter hooks" on equipment though it can all go wrong!! I'm having to put a fresh pair on each sample - so how good is that for the environment?

Gloves / messy hands, which choice to make?!
