A pause in normal programming for a report from Lilia’s day job!

This week I was lucky enough to attend NATCC - North American Textile Conservation Conference - to give a presentation on the mounting and mannequins developed for Fashioning Masculinities exhibition last year.

The conference was held at Colonial Williamsburg - a ‘living history’ museum of a town frozen in time on the cusp of the American Revolution.

CW is a very bonkers and very fascinating place - the best bit for me was that you can visit all the tradespeople the town would have needed - from blacksmiths to bookbinders to shoemakers to milliners who are all there working and crafting as authentically to the era as possible, and very happy to share their knowledge with inquisitive guests!

Of course my favourites were the mantua-makers and the tailor - where I spent a very happy hour discussing 18th century armholes !

They also had a great art museum with some wonderful portraits and great 18th century outfits.

With a huge thanks to for part-funding this trip!

What an exciting moment! Mama Alice had the opportunity to catch up with Lizzie from this season of The Great British Sewing Bee while she was visiting London.

They chatted all things pattern cutting, bodice drafting, and shared fond memories of when Lizzie took Alice’s famed trouser block class.

Mama Alice prepping to stitch up the popular Intrepid Boiler Suit. This beautiful blue will make heads turn as she struts her stuff down the streets of London. And a cheeky hot pink overlock thread is a hidden touch that’ll put a little pep in her step.
