Here's a little repair carried out for a lovely Client of mine, it has saved his garment after a little accident with a door handle tore a hole in the edge of the pocket. It was a small hole, but there was a lot of fraying to the edges. I tidied up the edges and inserted a small piece of matching fabric behind the tear and carefully hand stitched with tiny stitches, all over the damaged area, inside and outside of the pocket edge.

One of the reasons I have become so interested in sustainable sewing, is the sheer volume of textile waste on the planet. After taking a job as a volunteer at a local charity shop, and seeing all the incoming garments, many unsuitable to be resold, I started to wonder what happened to them when they were sold on to the textile recycling companies. Lots of research revealed the shocking truth, which is that a small proportion is made into rags and cleaning cloths for industrial use, some is shredded and turned into insulation products, but the vast majority is sold to Africa, where they have what is called Kantamanto market. The few good items are sold, but tons of garments are left over, as no-one wants them, and most of these end up in a massive landfill site, but some end up getting washed into the open sewers and drains, ultimately ending up in the ocean, where they cause other disasters, and end up washed up on the beaches, and buried in the sand. The You Tube video linked below, is well worth a watch, if you have the time.

One of my most recent sustainable sewing projects, made from a pair of old jeans! They were quite a big pair from the sale rail at the charity shop where I am a volunteer. Lots of left over scraps which I will make into coin purses😀

For a while now, I have been aware of the massive problem of textile waste. One way to help this problem is to keep the clothes that we have in use for longer. Having done dressmaking and sewing for about 47 years, I thought I could use my sewing skills and start a little business doing small repairs to garments and help people get more wear out of what they own, saving money and saving textiles from land fill.
