Cromer Seamstress About Cromer Seamstress: Katy returned to her hometown of Cromer in 2023 after 15 years away working in the professional costume industry.

Her love of theatre came from working every summer season at the Pavilion Theatre on Cromer Pier from age 15 to age 22. She spent 4 years touring with large musicals around the UK and Europe, such as Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Evita, Sister Act and Hairspray, before working in the West End. Her last 8 years were spent as the Head of Wardrobe for The Play That Goes Wrong. Additionally, Katy is a cost

ume maker and has made costume for The Globe, The National Theatre, Royal Shakespeare Company, Peter Pan Goes Wrong and many more, (examples of work can be found on Instagram ). Katy completed her first knitting project age 8 and made her first piece of clothing age 13. She has been sewing and learning ever since and is excited to be able to share her experience with others. Having settled into life back by the sea, Katy has set up a small business as Cromer Seamstress, alongside costume making Katy does local alterations and repairs, delivers workshops, sewing events and retreats, and gives private sewing and knitting tuition.

Wow, wow, wow! What an incredible couple of days at our Summer Sew Together: Intergenerational Sewing Day - Beginners Sewing Machine Workshop

It was such a joy to see children, parents, grandparents, friends and families spending time together, learning new skills, and creating something with their own hands.

We packed a lot into the day: getting to know our sewing machines, practicing essential techniques, making tissue holders to learn the basics, and then after lunch everyone chose their first proper project – a mini tote bag, a purse with pockets, or a canvas storage box.

Every single person did brilliantly, and the fabric combinations were absolutely spectacular. The children were amazing… and the grown-ups didn’t do too badly either!

The biggest goal of the day was simple: for everyone to leave with the confidence and skills to keep sewing, creating, and making at home. Judging by the smiles (and the finished projects!), I think we achieved exactly that.

🪟 Fabric for a Roman blind sample. I absolutely love the abstract design – I can’t explain why, it just speaks to me! Making blinds is one of the projects you can learn in my weekly Sewing for Home & Lifestyle classes on Wednesday mornings, so if you’ve been thinking about making blinds for your home, get in touch.

👚 And finally... a little something for me! My favourite top has been “retired” far too many times to be respectable now! Before it finally gives up, I’m lifting a pattern from it so I can recreate it in a beautiful new fabric. If you’d love to learn how to copy a favourite garment, that’s something I can teach too.

She’s really into her finger knitting at the moment and had some the perfect colours to make the perfect ties.
