Sometimes, life just happens.

You sit on your glasses.
You lose them.
The dog eats them.
Or you suddenly remember you’ve got a wedding, holiday or job interview tomorrow.

And, we’ve been thinking.

Years ago, making glasses while you waited wasn’t unusual. These days it almost feels like a forgotten skill.

The funny thing is… we still have the lenses. We still have the workshop. And we’ve spent years learning how to make glasses as quickly as they can possibly be made.

So we’re thinking of reintroducing an old practice.

If your prescription is straightforward and we have the lenses in stock, we could make your glasses the very same day. Sometimes, even within a couple of hours.

It won’t be possible with every prescription, but when it is, we’ll do everything we can to help.

Ladies And Gentlemen, The King Has Left The Building.

To all of our friends, if you met my dad, you’ll know how dearly loved he was.

We were besotted with him. All of us.

As well as making sure The Cooks had a brilliant life, he was there at the very beginning of Spex Pistols. It was my dad who got the idea off the ground with his generosity and encouragement, just like he always did.

Nobody ever had a better dad than we did. There may have been equals, but never better.

He was our hero. 💔

How lucky am I to have the last three bags of Braithwaite’s Best Blend, the last of the Scottish Flower Honey and, somehow, the last big bottle of Pola-Cola waiting for the summer sunshine of Stoabie.

Braithwaite’s has recently closed its doors after more than 200 years, and the Pola-Cola wall has just come back from the dead.

It makes you realise these were never just things.

They were Dundee 💛💛

Our wee street, Johnston’s Lane, just off the West Port, is one of Dundee’s oldest surviving streets. People have been walking these cobbles for well over 700 years.

There is evidence that Bram Stoker stayed in the garret rooms of No. 3 on his way to Hospitalfield in Arbroath.

But it’s the other story I love.

The story goes that somewhere on this very spot, perhaps right where our little yellow shop now stands, or on the cobbles just outside – William Wallace made his first move in the Wars of Independence.

They say he was cornered here by the sons of noblemen from the English garrison for daring to wear purple.

A fight broke out. About seven to one.

It swept through the streets of Dundee and ended with the sheriff’s son lying dead at the castle.

Whether every detail is true, nobody can really say. There were no official records. Just stories, passed from one generation to the next.

And perhaps that’s how it should be.

Old streets deserve a little mystery.

Next time you wander down Johnston’s Lane, have a look at the cobbles beneath your feet.

There’s always a seat waiting outside Land O’Spex.

If you’re passing this weekend, stop for a coffee, watch the world go by and say hello.

You don’t have to be looking for glasses. In fact, lots of people just pop in for a wander, a chat and a look around.

Our little yellow shop is open Monday to Saturday, 10.00 to 5.00 and we’d love to see you.

Every day, somebody walks through our door for the very first time.

Some come looking for glasses. Some just wander in because they’ve heard there’s a wee yellow shop full of old hings.

They’re both very welcome.

The truth is, Land O’Spex has never just been about spectacles. It’s about the things we love. Vintage toys. Old signs. Design. Music. Colour. Little pieces of nostalgia that make people smile.

If you’ve never been in before, don’t feel like you have to buy anything. You don’t.

Come in. Have a look around. Try on a few frames if you fancy. Have a chat. If you leave smiling without spending a penny, that’s absolutely fine with us.

We’re open Monday to Saturday, 10 to 6 and everyone is welcome.

Yesterday, this old Pola-Cola sign came back from the dead.

Today, there’s even better news.

When I first saw it, it genuinely had only hours left before disappearing beneath fresh harling for another lifetime. Thankfully, after a chat with the council, the restoration officer is now looking at ways it might be preserved.

A lot of credit should go to the craftsmen working on the wall. It can’t have been easy uncovering something this fragile, but they’ve done it with real care. They could easily have buried it again. They didn’t, and I’m so glad.

This isn’t just an old advert. It’s part of the story of Stobswell.

We sometimes forget just how much architectural and industrial history survives here. The Land o’ Cakes shop. Morgan Academy. Baxter Park Pavilion. The Water Works. Clepington Primary School — one of the most important Edwardian buildings in Scotland, built in the Mackintosh style — and, of course, the old tram depot, now being restored as Dundee’s Transport Museum.

And now this.

An old painted wall that somehow survived decades hidden in plain sight.

It would really help to show how many people want this precious sign kept. If you’d like to see it preserved, please leave a comment below. It might just make a big difference.

Back from the dead!

This old Pola-Cola sign has just been unearthed after decades hidden beneath harling, and I can hardly believe I’m looking at it again.

I’ve loved this sign all of my life. I’ve got the old photograph of it on my wall at home, and I’ve collected bits of Pola-Cola memorabilia whenever I’ve been lucky enough to find them. It always felt like a little piece of old Dundee that had disappeared forever.
Then today, there it was.

Old painted signs have a strange magic about them. They weren’t meant to last. They were just there to sell a soft drink. Yet somehow they end up carrying the memories of generations.
And that’s exactly why this one matters so much. Once something like this is lost, it’s gone for good.

We don’t get a second chance to hold onto these fragments of our past. This sign isn’t just paint on a wall, it’s a rare survivor, a tangible link to the everyday lives, streets, and stories that shaped Dundee.

I really hope this can be protected, restored, and cared for properly. It deserves more than to be covered up again or left to fade away. It deserves to be seen, remembered, and valued as part of the city’s heritage.

The best bit? There’s another section of wall still covered, and I’m convinced there might be another sign waiting underneath.
