ℹ️ A neat fashion-history fact: the material called “horsehair braid” that was traditionally sewn into the hems of dresses and skirts was originally made from actual horsehair—often woven with cotton or linen. It added stiffness and structure, helping skirts flare out and hems keep their shape without looking bulky.

Today, when dressmakers talk about horsehair braid, they’re usually referring to a synthetic version made from nylon, polyester, or other plastics. It serves the same purpose—giving volume and a crisp edge to hems on wedding dresses, evening gowns, ballet costumes, and petticoats—but it’s more consistent, durable, and easier to manufacture than real horsehair.

We covered:
• Threading the machine and winding a bobbin
• Changing the needle, cleaning and maintenance
• Machine control and basic stitches
•Matching notches
• Seam finishes, French seam and overlock
• Twin needle top stitch
• Gathering
