Antique carved walnut boxes from Kashmir, in the western Himalayas: usually carved from a single block of wood, with no joints except the hinges for the lid! The delicate under-carved struts and gorgeous patterns are often based on the lotus lily and it’s fruits, which grow in the lakes near Srinagar.

The early 20th century saw the introduction of newly invented plastics to jewellery making, in the form of bakelite ’amber’ - glowing clear ruby reds, honeys and opaque cherry and butterscotch colours. They became favourites during the Art Deco period in the 1920s/30s. We’re lucky to have come across some of these beautiful necklaces and matching bangles: a rare treat!

This collection of gorgeous Art Deco styled glassware is scarcely recognisable as Caithness Glass. Dating from the 1960s, these ‘Scaraben’ range glasses and decanter are exceptionally high quality. The sooty black bases emphasise the refraction rings in the clear glass, giving a luxurious effect.

The ‘Scaraben’ range was amongst the first designs by Domhnall OBroin, in 1961, as Caithness Glass was being started. This design was certainly influenced by the Art Deco designs of Edward Hald and Simon Gate at Orrefors in Sweden, produced in the 1930s, and it retains their high quality.

The difficult, skilled nature of creating these glasses led to a high percentage of wastage. They were only made for a very few years, in the mid-1960s, and although beautiful these are now rare and hard to find.

Here are a Festive trio of 1960s vintage Caithness vases, elegantly tapering and in the Scottish colours of Heather, Moss and Peat. These large streamlines vases, designed by Domhnall OBroin, punch a strong mid-century design statement.

Three original ‘Loch’ blue and one ‘Heather’ cylinder vases by Caithness Glass, dating from the 1960s: all classic designs by Domhnall OBroin from when CG was first established in Wick, in the far north of Scotland. Modelled on mid-century clean lines of Scandinavian design. The hooped vase is the most unique and is very striking: since it was difficult to make, very few were produced, and this colour combination is rare.

The Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles Championship trophy, known as the ‘Venus Rosewater Dish’, was fist introduced in 1886. This early and almost full size replica dates from around 1890. It’s made of heavy gauge copper and brass, and is about 17 inches in diameter. The original tennis trophy was made in silver by Elkington & Co. of Birmingham. It was based on the 16th century ‘Temperantia’ dish by Francois Briot.

These thoroughly modernistic, freeform rounded heart-shaped vases were actually made in 1956! Designed by the acclaimed Per Lutken for Holmegaard in Denmark, these gorgeous ‘Menuet’ (Minuet) vases are made in pale ‘akva’ (aqua) blue glass: the biggest, weighing over 2.2 kilos, is the largest example I know of, and must have required exceptional skill and strength to make.

They are hand-signed (etched) on the base with the maker, the date and the stylised PL monogram of the designer.

Two gorgeous 1930s French Art Deco opalescent satin glass dishes reminiscent of the work and quality of Rene Lalique. The first is a shallow bowl created at the Choisy-le-Roi glassworks to the south of Paris. This was the same maker as Lalique himself used. The design, known as the “Dahlia”, is by by Andre Hunebelle, who was renowned for his complex geometric patterns. The second dish, with the “Arcs et Baies” pattern, was designed by J. Landier for the Cristallerie de Sevres to the SW of Paris.
