Making merchandise matter doesn't mean making more merchandise.

Sometimes the answer is actually to make less.

Less stuff bought because β€œwe always do.”

Less merchandise without a clear purpose.

Less destined for the back of a drawer.

I'd rather create one thing that genuinely means something to the person receiving it than ten things they don't want.

Less, but better.

That's a pretty good place to start.

Networking has changed my business.

Not because I've walked into rooms handing out business cards.

And not because I've perfected an elevator pitch.

It's been conversations.

Introductions.

Collaborations.

People saying, "You need to speak to Lee."

On Thursday, I'm taking the spotlight at Scale Up Circle to talk about how networking has helped me grow Box Brand β€” and some of the things I've learned along the way.

I'll be talking about what has actually worked for me, including the opportunities that have come from simply getting to know people rather than trying to sell to them.

If you're growing a business and wondering whether networking is worth the time, come and join us.

And I promise not to tell you to work the room and collect as many business cards as possible. πŸ˜‚

Blank to Branded went on tour. 🏍️
One stall.
A LOT of merchandise.
And a community it actually means something to.
Some merchandise is bought.
Some is earned.
Because this isn't really about putting a logo on something.
It's about belonging.

I'm going to say something that might seem slightly odd coming from someone who sells merchandise...

Stop buying merchandise. πŸ˜‚

At least until you've answered one question:

Why are we doing this?

Not what should we buy?

Not how many can we get for the budget?

Not where should the logo go?

Why does it need to exist in the first place?

That's what I'm exploring in this week's Making Merchandise Matter Journal.

Because I'd genuinely rather see a business buy nothing than spend money creating hundreds of products that nobody wants, needs or remembers.

Making merchandise matter doesn't mean making more merchandise.

I'd love to know what you think.

This week I've been talking a lot about one question:

What's its job?

And the more I've thought about it, the more I've realised that question applies to far more than merchandise.

Your calendar has a job.

Your meetings have a job.

Your social media has a job.

Even saying no has a job.

When you know what something is there to achieve, decisions become much simpler.

You know what deserves your time.

What earns its place.

And what doesn't.

I think we sometimes make things far more complicated than they need to be because we haven't stopped to ask what we're actually trying to achieve.

Purpose simplifies decisions.

And today?

Well, I'm at the Mischief MCC rally, pressing merchandise live all weekend.

So apparently everything has a job...

including me. πŸ˜‚

Have a great weekend β€” I know what I'll be doing! 🏍️

Community in Action ❀️

One of my favourite things about hosting Central Circle is never quite knowing where the conversations are going to take us.

Yes, we have speakers.

Yes, we have breakout rooms.

But some of the best moments happen in the conversations in between.

A question someone asks.

An experience somebody shares.

A connection that continues long after the meeting has finished.

This afternoon I'm joined by two brilliant speakers, Paul D***s and Cristian Voinea, and we'll be exploring ideas around leadership, resilience, confidence and what it means to keep growing β€” not just your business, but yourself.

But as always, the speakers are only part of it.

The people in the room make the community.

We're online from 1pm–2.30pm, and non-members are always welcome.

And if you're already part of Circle...

Bring a friend. πŸ˜„

You never know which conversation might be the one they needed.

Every piece of merchandise should have a job before it has a logo.

What's it there to achieve?

To welcome?

To thank?

To connect?

To create belonging?

To make someone smile?

Purpose first. Product second.

That's how we make merchandise matter.

This Thursday, I'm back hosting Central Circle, and we've got two very different speakers with one interesting theme running through both of their stories...

Who do you become as you build your business?

🎀 Paul D***s is a leadership expert who explores what happens when you've built the business, earned the title or achieved the success... and find yourself asking, "What now?"

His work is about developing the qualities already within us and connecting how we show up with how we lead.

🎀 Cristian Voinea arrived in Scotland with a suitcase and a dream.

Today, he's a property entrepreneur and business consultant who helps people build their businesses, investments and, perhaps most importantly, their belief in themselves.

Two speakers.

Two very different perspectives.

And plenty to get us talking.

Before you order your next piece of branded merchandise...

Ask one question:

What's its job?

To welcome?

To thank?

To start a conversation?

To create belonging?

To make someone smile?

Stop asking:

"What can we give away?"

Start asking:

"What do we need this to do?"

That's how we start making merchandise matter.
