BTS on the making of Coral's bee-inspired prom dress.
🐝 It was originally going to be a TARDIS-inspired dark blue as she's also a hige Doctor Who fan (Matt Smith is her favourite Doctor);
🍯 It used nine different fabrics including two types of glitter tulle, several organzas, and silk satin I dyed myself;
🐝 I made 48 anatomically correct, individually embroidered bee wings, which took nearly two weeks on their own;
🍯 I made the honeycomb fabric for the bodice myself because we couldn't find anything quite right;
🐝 It was the only multicoloured dress I saw at the prom;
🍯 It took around two months' full-time work spread over six months;
🐝 It would therefore cost £2,500-£4,000 to make bespoke for a client (which is why I don't generally make prom dresses);
🍯 There are several things we'd change if we were starting again, including cutting the bodice lower, making it an actual corset (rather than a corset-style top) for better bust support, and we'd probably have to make the bodice opaque as the tulle we lined it with - although superfine - caused some sensory issues.
🐝 Coral is my favourite girl in the entire world. Put her in charge of it. Please.

🚨🪡 Red carpet dress emergency! 🪡🚨
While waiting for Coral to arrive with Ryan (side note: his GLORIOUS hairdo), I received a message from her after one of the bee wings on her dress got caught and ripped from her dress as she got in his sister's car to travel to prom.
What colour emergency light should dressmakers have? I do love turquoise and would be on-brand for me. 😁

🐝 My daughter Coral, heading to prom on the hottest day of the year. Of all the lovely photos I've just taken of her, this is genuinely the only one she is allowing me to post.
🐝 I made her dress inspired by her honeybees (she has three beehives). Each layer in the skirt section is an anatomically correct bee wing (I've learned a lot about honeybee anatomy in the making of this dress). I embroidered the honeycomb on tulle for the bodice myself.
🐝 Beekeeper, Whovian, mathematician, my moral compass, and beautiful inside and out. I am so proud of this person, I could explode.
