Some things never change... even in a heatwave! ☀️🧵
Today I'm sewing fur trim onto a coat while enjoying the sunshine outdoors, which feels slightly ironic given the temperature! 😂

These days my primary focus is teaching, so I only take on a small number of regular clients. Some of them have been with me for an incredible 22 years, and I'm so grateful for their continued trust and support.
Keeping a handful of industry projects on the go helps me stay connected to current practice and forms an important part of my Continuing Professional Development. It means I can bring real-world experience straight into the classroom for my students.

Dressmakers, beware... you may want to bring an empty suitcase to Rye! 😍
Today my husband and I visited Merchant & Mills, and what a beautiful shop it is. Stunning fabrics, dressmaking patterns, sample garments you can see, plus all the haberdashery essentials.
The biggest surprise? My husband found two fabrics he loves and has already requested shirts made from them! 🪡
It's wonderful to see how inspiring fabrics can spark creativity and new project ideas. Add in the charm of Rye itself, and it makes for the perfect day out.

As someone who teaches dressmaking, I believe there's something special about making your own clothes for life's important moments. I made this dress for special occasions as well as everyday, and have now worn it twice in the same week: to my son's graduation and to a lovely afternoon tea with my husband of 25 years, courtesy of a voucher we received last year.
I think we need to normalise repeating outfits, especially those we've made ourselves. In a world where social media can make us feel pressure to wear something different for every event, choosing to rewear a garment is something to celebrate, not apologise for.
Every time I wear this dress, I will be reminded of the memories attached to it. That's what slow fashion is all about: creating clothes we love, wearing them often, and appreciating the value in what we already have.

As sewing machine issues often arise during lessons, this workshop was a great learning experience. It confirmed that I am teaching learners the correct techniques for cleaning the bobbin area and removing built-up fluff. We also saw the importance of regular servicing, taking machines apart to understand how oil and lint can build up over time and affect performance. A really useful and insightful session! 🧵✨

🧵 Today I'm sewing on a Singer Model 20 'Sewhandy' chain-stitch machine, dating from around 1914–1925. Originally marketed as an educational machine for children, this miniature hand-cranked Singer was capable of producing real stitches and introduced young makers to the fundamentals of sewing. More than a century later, it is still stitching beautifully—a small machine with a remarkable story of craftsmanship, learning and fashion history.

What can I say other than a huge thank you 😊

We had such a lovely evening last night at my end-of-year get-together — and the second one I've hosted in my studio. Last year, I had only just taken the space on, so standing there last night and seeing you all chatting, laughing, and connecting made me feel incredibly warm inside.

What started as an empty studio has become a proper little community, and I'm so grateful to every one of you for being part of it. ❤️
