Remade Reloved by Marie upcycling fabric, especially wedding dresses, saving old sewing machines!

i paid £10 whole English pounds for this piece of social history by the way!
i might have a 1940s wedding dress made from a world war 2 parachute… but do i?

when i bought this dress it came wrapped in newspapers from august 1945, right at the end of ww2. the auction listing said it was made from parachute silk, but i have my doubts.
the silk is absolutely beautiful, the dress has been made very cleverly with very little waste.
But is it actually parachute silk? or have i just fallen for a really good story?!

if you know anything about this, please tell me what you think because i am DYING to know.
either way, it's one of my favourite pieces in my collection and it's definitely not going anywhere.

I thought that it was time to show you around my collections. I have lots of collections. I have vintage dresses, wedding dresses, vintage wedding dresses (!) sewing machines, other sewing bits and bobs and collectibles, and my own handmade dresses so this could really take a while!
The first one I want to show you is one of my absolute favourites - this is my Laura Ashley vintage Bo Peep dress from the early '80s - I've posted about it a few times but the more i use it, the more i love it. it turns out it's incredibly rare and sought after and i had no idea - i just happened to see a bit of this glorious fabric sticking out of a clothing rail at a second hand sale and you bet i grabbed it so fast because it was gorgeous! i will never find another bargain as great as this one. i had heard of Laura Ashley of course but i had no idea her dresses were so well made and how sought after they are. well i do now.

this dress has had two outings recently, one the photos on this post with the lovely Katie Burden (.model.portfolio on IG) and the other which I'm still editing which includes a horse. more to come on that later :)

Recently i went out to do a portfolio building shoot with new model .model on this lovely sunny evening down at the beach.

She was wearing my handmade soft corset top with a lace up back which was made from an old curtain. This top was only ever meant to be a practice to learn how to make this style of corset but it actually came out well so i decided to use it. the skirt used to be a dress but i didn't like the top so i took it off, and bound the waistline in bias tape for a really quick and easy change. I think this outfit works surprisingly well at the beach because of the soft cream and yellow tones.

Are you looking for the perfect vintage wedding dress?

I need to make room, so I'm looking to rehome this stunning vintage 1960s all over lace wedding dress in a classic A line silhouette. The back of the dress is truly stunning with a tiered lace train.

This dress is absolutely gorgeous and has been cleaned and repaired, ready for a bride to make it part of her story.

There are some minor imperfections but as it's over 60 years old and a true vintage dress, it just shows it's had a previous life! I took on this dress from a lady who has been happily married but she needed to downsize and hence find a new home for her beautiful dress.

I'm looking to part with it for £100 to reflect the work that has been put into it to clean and repair it.

The dress would suit size 8-10 with height around 5ft5 or below. I can take full measurements if necessary. Happy to post if costs covered or you can collect from me.

So it is reduce, reuse and recycle week on the Great British sewing bee and some of us have been doing that for years! but it's not always immediately obvious where you could go to find great options for upcycling. so I've gathered some of my finds together to show you five places where you might be able to look for fabric or garment suitable for upcycling. this is not an exhaustive list And you won't always be able to find exactly what you want, but I have found that committing to using upcycled or second-hand fabrics. whatever I can has made me far more of a creative problem solving sewer than I would have been otherwise!

I'd love to know in the comments what was your best upcycled or secondhand fabric find, whether you are a beginner sewer or you've been sewing for years!

five more sewing tools for under £5 - have you heard of these? have you used them? do you know of any more that I've missed?

1. a wrist pin cushion - so helpful for when you're pinning things especially to your mannequin - much safer than putting them in your mouth!
2. prym needle grabbers - i bought these when i was in to embroidery - very helpful if you're doing a lot of hand sewing and struggle to hold or pull needles.
3. loop turner - very helpful for making spaghetti straps and turning them through. it's still going to be a pain in the backside, but this does help!
4. extra long tape measure - this one is my go to!
5. a little roll of 2mm tape - absolutely essential for draping and as i make 95% of things from draping because i struggle to follow a pattern, this little thing is invaluable for me.

so let me know - what other essential tool for under £5 have i missed?!

I'm so nosy i love hearing about other people's origin story.
if you want to learn to sew but you haven't, what's stopping you?
if you do already sew, how did you get started?

i had always wanted to after watching great British sewing bee and project runway etc and id always wanted to learn to sew so a chance encounter with a lady with 50 years experience changed everything - she told me just get on with it if you really want to learn, them do it!
so i did! lucky for me my mum is a talented sewer/quilter so she showed me the basics and the rest I've taught myself.

team me your origin story, i want to know? or if you haven't started yet, why not? what barriers have you got? i might be able to unpick some of them in my future videos 😊

can anyone please tell me why this works because it feels like it shouldn't?!
sewing hacks with household objects and this time its.... paracetamol!

yes this hack uses one of the cheapest items you probably have in your home and can save you hours of effort.

I'm always sewing over my interfacing and getting things stuck to my iron. this is such an easy tip. simply warm up your iron, and then grab the paracetamol tablet over any dirty areas. obviously keep your fingers well away from the hot iron plate. then rub it off. I rubbed it on my ironing board cover because I am about to wash it anyway but I should really have rubbed it on a cloth. never mind! I've called myself out on it so you can't 🤣🤪

had you heard this tip whether you're a beginner sewer or more experienced? would you try it? any others similar i should try? let me know!
