A discreet woven darn for this much loved and dog nibbled hat 🐶

Chewed up garments seem to be becoming a very niche (and welcome!) challenge for me to repair at the moment - I can't wait to see what's next!

Mending as an act of love ❤️

A set of double sided heart shaped darns were requested to mend this blanket that had been expertly snipped by a small pair of cheeky hands ✂️

If you have an item in need of repair you can get in touch with me via email (link in bio) to talk through your options ☺️

Have you ever noticed that you wear your clothes out in all of the same places? These 5 cardigans had all worn thin at the elbows over the years and a matching set of honeycomb darns have brought them back to life ☺️

With big mends like these I've been listening to audiobooks a lot more as they help me get into a good flow state, which means that these darns will always remind me of Wuthering Heights!

Mending things that are broken is hard.
It takes time, it requires patience.
The repair will never quite be the same as what was there before, it fundamentally changes things.
But that doesn't mean it's not worth trying.
That doesn't mean you should avoid it all together, or worse give up.
What if the repair builds a stronger foundation?
What if the repair allows a whole new mindset to take shape?
What if there are threads woven in that add not only colour, but resilience too.

A few thoughts from my mending table, in a world that seems to be full of inhumane people intent on breaking things. For every one of them, I know that there are so many more of us here ready to repair the damage and build something better 🖤

Hello 👋

If you've been here for a while you'll know I tend to hibernate in lots of ways in January, but that definitely doesn't apply to mending. My attic studio is currently filled with lots of moth eaten, dog chewed and otherwise worn out pieces that I'm working my way through and as always I'm beyond grateful to everyone that is keeping me so busy!

I've finally upped my game with the data of my mending this year and will be tracking not only the number of garments I mend, but the number of mends themselves as well. Last year I hit just over 240 garments mended, but the number of mends was probably double (if not triple that!) so let's see where this year takes me...

My latest Darn it! course is also up and running and I've got in person workshops coming up over the next few months too. You can find out more about those and book tickets via my website.

If you're already in the world of mending and don't need a workshop but are looking for a space to chat and mend with others, you can also join me on Patreon; our next mending meet up is on Thursday and we'd love to see you there ☺️

This January Keep Britain Tidy are asking us to join them in buying nothing new for the month.

Did you know that…

👖More than half of UK adults (52%) admit they have binned repairable clothing in the past year, rising to almost two thirds (60%) of 18–24-year-olds.

Shockingly 3% (equivalent to 2.1 million* people) threw away more than ten lightly damaged garments in the past year, collectively binning more than 20 million items that could have been repaired.

🪡 Only half of Brits (50%) would bother to fix an item that needed a minor repair themself, such as a missing button. Nearly a third would recycle the item (30%) and almost 1 in 7 (13%) would simply throw it in the rubbish bin.

So if you’d like to reconnect with the clothing already in your wardrobe and save damaged items from going to waste, then join me in signing up to Buy Nothing New Month (apart from essentials like food and medicine!). I have a whole bunch of resources all about visible mending available on Patreon, YouTube and in my book Well Worn. You can find links for all of these as well as the form to sign up with Keep Britain Tidy in my bio as well as in the comments below.

Buy Nothing New Month is a great place to start if you’re looking to rediscover your wardrobe and spend some time learning a new skill. Remember, mended is better than perfect and visible mending is unique to you and your well loved clothes.

*The calculations have been conducted by Keep Britain Tidy using YouGov data.

Introducing you to both the smallest and oldest garments that I've ever repaired!

Teddy is from the 1930's and the jumper and bloomers were knit for Teddy as Christmas presents.
Moths had had a feast on the jumper and bloomers over the years and I was asked to give them a new lease of life. I ended up sticking to discreet swiss darning repairs all over, and the textured knit of the jumper meant that the repairs have ended up blending in really well.

Isn't it cool that these 90+ year old garments can now keep going and keep Teddy warm for many more years 🥹🧸

Thank you to Katie for trusting me with such a special project 🫶

If you have a garment in need of repair you can get in touch via my website; my January slots are fully booked but there's still space in February.

Monochrome elbow mend for this cosy jumper.

My mending pile has been full of jumpers over the last few weeks - mostly in need of discreet swiss darning repairs - so this was an extra fun repair to work on 🤓

You can learn how to darn your favourite knits from my book Well Worn and also join me on Patreon for tutorials and community mending chatter!
