Labelling scarves- a process I do by hand.

Labelling is the part of the making process I tend to put off, but it turns out it’s a great task for hot weather!

On my desk you can see a mix of lambswool scarves and zero waste merino scarves that I’m getting ready for Pittenweem Arts Festival.

Hanging up behind them is a linen shirt I’ve been visibly mending for the last four years- it’s finally ready to be worn again!

And the last photo features some home grown sweet peas that I brought into the studio to enjoy- such a delight just now!

Summery skinny silk scarves- ideal for Scottish summers when you need a bit of shimmer and a scarf to combat grey windy days….

Earrings by Caroline Finlay. Caroline and I will be sharing a venue at Pittenweem Arts Festival 1-8th August and I can’t wait!

I’m busy knitting for it at the moment as fast as I can ( which isn’t very fast as each one is made on my vintage, Flora powered knitting machine)!

Treasures from my walk today!

I found this beautiful wild orchid, and a stunning moth. I’ve learnt that this is a light emerald moth, and this is a heath spotted orchid. I’ve come across a few insects and plants that are new to me recently.

The last photo is my Orchid silk scarf, inspired by these and other beautiful wild orchids I’ve found on my walks.

I’ve also been looking for inspiration for a personal project on my walk today- there’s so much inspiration to be found around us!

All ready to welcome students to my studio this weekend for a two day visible mending workshop!

We’re going to cover all the essential knitwear repair techniques while making them colourful and fun, drinking plenty of tea/coffee and I’ve even made cake. Actually I made two types of cake…

My last two day visible mending workshop in my studio will be on the 22-23rd September- you can book a place via my website if you’d like to take part! There’s plenty of info about getting here and other things you might be interested in in the Borders there too.

Knitting silk scarves in a heatwave and a few small wins:

I’m incredibly grateful that I don’t work from home anymore as my studio is much cooler, even if it is gradually getting hotter by the day!

The other good thing is that knitting machines work better when they’re warm, so this is an excellent time to knit.

And silk is pretty and shiny and I’ve been knitting a full rainbow of scarves for Pittenweem Arts Festival so that’s very pleasing too. The full range is of course available on my website too….

Every year I try to make sure I go on some sort of creative workshop that has nothing to do with knitwear!

Yesterday I spent the day learning basket weaving with Anna Liebmann and had a great time making a willow basket. It was incredibly satisfying seeing a 3D object take shape!

As someone who teaches regularly, I think it’s important to be a student every now and then and be a beginner at something.

A thoroughly enjoyable day, and I highly recommend Anna’s workshops!

Scenes from my studio this week as I start making scarves for Pittenweem Arts Festival in August!

It’s a slow process to go from yarn to finished scarf as I knit each one myself, as well as doing all the washing, pressing, labelling etc. seeing the change from cones of yarn through to the finished product is always very satisfying.

The full range of scarves and colours is available from my website.

I haven’t always felt confident with colour.

Although I now have a distinctive use of colour and it’s often what people associate with my work, for years I lacked confidence.

At university, I was regularly marked down for my use of colour
(Although looking back I was often told I had to use colours forecasted in trend publications, and they rarely inspired me).

Some of my early freelance work designing swatches was less likely to be successful if I used colour, but sold better if I stuck to neutral shades.

Despite wearing colour with confidence and being surrounded by it in my home, I wasn’t confident about using it in my work.

Did you know my first scarves for Collingwood-Norris were in greys? And they’re still going strong!

Then I realised my colour choices didn’t have to fit in with trends any more.
I could create colour palettes I loved, and that would look great on people

The whole point of Collingwood-Norris is that it’s not trend led, it’s designed to be worn year after year. You can choose to wear colours that make you feel great, rather than having to wear something someone else tells you is cool this month.

The colours in my work are often inspired by my walk in the Scottish Borders. The changing colours of the seasons endlessly bring me joy.
They’re colours I hope will make you feel joy too!

A little studio update!

I’m starting to get ready for events in August- making by hand is slow, so I need to start knitting now!

Looking forward to taking part in Pittenweem Arts Festival for the first time this year, 1-8th August
