I’m just back from 9 beautiful days on the Isle of Mull. I feel lucky to call it my home from home, where I spent my first 11 years. On the last day, my friend and I walked along the dramatic coastline to the Carsaig arches, a remote and challenging walk I’ve only done once before. A very special place 💙

I’ve been taking time when I can to explore natural dyeing in combination with katazome. It’s an inherently slow process and is going to take a while to achieve the results I’m looking for. The first two images are coreopsis grown by at the Granton Castle Walled Garden and the second two are alder that I foraged locally.

A little piece of Japan in Scotland. This afternoon I visited for their open studios weekend. The Japanese garden is just a small section of an immaculately kept walled garden within Marchmont Estate.

It was fantastic to see such a range of artists and craftspeople being supported to work in the Foundation’s workshops and studios. Well worth a day trip!

A little preview of a new colour I’ve been working on for the Dulse small silk scarf. I’m still in my orange phase but leaning towards earthier tones. I’d love to know what you think!

I’ve added a limited number of silk & cotton blend tops to my online shop. Handmade from fabric digitally printed in Glasgow by the tops slip over the head, with a vintage shell button fastening at the back of the neck.

My first visit to Northern Ireland, with a wee trip to Donegal for good measure. Of course I had to visit a woollen mill and collect some seaweed along the way. Oh and I’m a knitter now! With thanks to my host

Katazome dyed Irish linen. Naturally dyed with madder (pinky-red) and a mix of madder & safflower (peach). The colour has changed drastically from when it was brushed on - see my previous post. I think I preferred the earthier tones - lots more experimenting to do!

I took advantage of today’s sunshine and worked on some katazome textile samples outside.

This is my first attempt brushing natural dye (madder in this case) onto fabric that I’ve applied resist-paste to. The samples are in the steamer now in order to fix the dye to the fabric. I’m looking forward to seeing the results!

I had a fantastic evening at the Treasures of the Deep exhibition opening on Friday. It was lovely to meet the other artists and seaweed enthusiasts. With thanks again to for curating and organising the surrounding events.

The exhibition runs until 1st March and I’m back in St Andrews tomorrow for an artist’s talk and Q&A, pop along if you can!
