Mensch finally managed to see one of our favourite paintings in the (painted) flesh on this Berlin visit, Evening over Potsdam by Lotte Laserstein, completed in 1930. Part of the fabulous Ruin and Rush show at the Neue Nationalgalerie, It’s considered to be a melancholic anticipation of the terrible years ahead: the gloomy dog beneath the table, the figures looking away or staring into space. The poor bu**er second from the right embodies ‘it’s all fu**ed, isn’t it’. Thank goodness we’ve moved on from that kind of thing!
