Our favourite love story ♥️

This week, we said goodbye to our wonderful gran, Elspeth, at the incredible age of 97. ❤️

As we looked through old photographs, one story kept coming back to us.

New Year’s Eve, 1949.

Just a few years after the war, hundreds of people gathered at Kilmarnock’s Grand Hall to dance their way into a new year filled with hope.

Our grandpa John asked Gran to marry her that night.

She always said it was the happiest night of her life.

But what makes the story even more extraordinary is that they weren’t the only ones. Six couples got engaged that New Year’s Eve, and a photographer gathered them together for one unforgettable photograph.

Of course, life had its ups and downs, just as it did for so many couples of that generation. At a time when religious differences could still make the road to marriage far from straightforward, love often had a few extra hurdles to overcome.

But somehow, that only makes this night feel even more special.

Whenever Gran told the story, she never focused on the obstacles. She talked about the excitement, the dancing, the proposal, and the feeling that the future was full of possibility. It was as though the magic of that New Year’s Eve stayed with them, carrying them through everything that came afterwards.

Out of everything she experienced across 97 remarkable years, this was still the memory she called the happiest night of her life. 🤍
