We are extremely saddened to announce the passing of Kevin Thompson on Tuesday the 1st of September.

Kevin was the founder of Thompson Opticians.

At age 22 Kevin opened his first branch in his hometown of Alnwick in 1984 and was a familiar face and character in the town.

Over time he grew the business to 32 branches including one branch in Scotland, he was extremely proud of the business he built. Kevin sold the business last October to concentrate on his battle with cancer.

Kevin was an advocate for Optometry, especially for Independent Opticians, he was a council member of the Association of Optometrists for 18 years including a spell as chairman, he was recently awarded the AOP’s Peter Yeo Award – the highest accolade given by the Association.

He was an entrepreneur and the list of ventures and businesses he was involved in included being a Postmaster, Commercial Waste Operator amongst many others.

Kevin will be deeply missed by his patients, former colleagues, friends and family.

Our thoughts are with Kevin's close family at this sad time.

What should I do when my contact lenses feel uncomfortable?

If your contact lenses feel uncomfortable it is a sign that you need to take action. You may have some dust or dirt on your lens, so if it’s a reusable soft lens or a GP lens take it out and rinse it using the correct contact lens solution. Do not be tempted to rinse the lens in water. Inspect the lens for damage before putting it back in your eye. If the problem persists, contact your optician for advice. Daily disposable contact lenses should always be discarded on removal.

The 91-year-old acting legend opened up about her severe macular degeneration during an emotional conversation with her close friend Sir Ian McKellen.

The eye disease has devastated her central vision since she was diagnosed back in 2012.

She admitted she can no longer read, watch television, or even recognise the people standing right in front of her.
