👅 Let’s Talk Tongues! 👅

One thing I discuss with clients all the time during bit fittings is tongue size—and the variation between horses can be REMARKABLE.

If you see the same horse every day, it’s easy to assume all mouths are fairly similar. In reality, two horses of the same size can have completely different amounts of space available inside the mouth.

I was fortunate enough to spend some time shadowing my horse’s equine dental technician and managed to capture these photos to illustrate the difference between a small tongue and a very large tongue.

Both horses are drawing their tongues back slightly, but look closely at the larger tongue. To create that movement, it has to curl upwards and spill over the bars of the mouth. This particular horse also has a relatively low palate (the roof of the mouth), meaning a large tongue is already occupying much of the available space.

When you combine a chunky tongue with a low palate, there simply isn’t a lot of room left for a bit. That’s why understanding each horse’s individual oral anatomy is so important when selecting and fitting a bit. What works beautifully for one horse may feel uncomfortable or restrictive for another.

This is one of the many reasons why bit fitting isn’t about finding a “popular” bit—it’s about finding the right bit for the horse in front of you.

👇 I’d love to know—do you know whether your horse has a small, average, or large tongue? Let us know in the comments and let’s see just how much variation there is!

🐴 Nothing makes me smile more than receiving updates like this!

A huge congratulations to the lovely King and his talented young rider, who won both of their showjumping classes today 👑🏆✨

King is such a sweet young horse, and it’s been a pleasure to help support his comfort and confidence through careful bit and bridle fitting. Seeing horses perform happily and comfortably in their work is exactly why I do what I do. ❤️

This wonderful team have such a bright future ahead of them and I can’t wait to follow their journey because when we prioritise horse welfare, comfort, and communication, great things can happen. 🐎✨

Swipe to see just how relaxed and content King was during his fitting session last week 😍

What a wonderful day out jumping with sponsored rider Grace Gerry GG Eventing and GL Equestrian and her talented Diamond Jubilee 😍 he’s such a delight to work with!

I am always happy to travel out to clinics/ competitions/ arena hires to see your horse in the environment you need help assessing - it can be hard to recreate competition excitement at home!

I am always on top of biosecurity but will be stepping this up a notch whilst this current outbreak is so prevalent 😷

Please keep an eye on your horses and do let me know if you have any cases, I am more than happy to reschedule!

🚨 UPDATED: Equine Influenza Outbreaks Increasing Across England 🚨

Following the latest EIDS (Equine Infectious Disease Surveillance ) update (17/04/2026), the situation has escalated.

There are now nine confirmed outbreaks of equine influenza across multiple counties, with evidence suggesting ongoing transmission and a likely continued rise in cases.

⚠️ What this means for horse owners:

Monitor horses closely for symptoms: fever, coughing, nasal discharge, reduced appetite
Take daily temperatures (normal should be below 38.5°C)
Isolate any horse showing signs immediately
Stop all unnecessary horse movements on and off the yard

💉 If it’s been more than 6 months since the last flu vaccination, speak to your vet about boosters, ESPECIALLY for horses in contact with others.

🦠 Infected horses can spread the virus through coughing and may shed it for up to 10 DAYS, early action is critical.

🧰 Important guidance regarding saddlery appointments:

In light of the current situation, we kindly ask horse owners and yard managers to carefully consider upcoming visits from our Registered Qualified Saddlery Fitters and anyone on the multi disciplinary team.

✔️ If your yard has any suspected or confirmed illness, please inform your saddlery fitter in advance
✔️ Where possible, reschedule non-urgent appointments
✔️ Maintain strict biosecurity protocols during any essential visits
✔️ Ensure no equipment is shared between horses without proper disinfection

Our Registered Qualified Saddlery Fitters are working hard to support horse welfare while also helping to minimise the risk of disease spread between yards.

❗ Even if your horse is vaccinated, DONOT IGNORE SYMPTOMS, contact your vet immediately.

📢 Please share to help protect horses, yards, and professionals working across the industry.
