Nadia Sews Alterations, Dressmaking and Sewing Workshops

Sewing (and all ‘craft’ in my opinion) is art because it carries stories that stretch across generations.

Every stitch connects us to the people who came before us—the skills they learned, the traditions they preserved, and the creativity they passed down by hand. Sewing isn’t just about making something beautiful; it’s about keeping knowledge alive, honouring our ancestors, and continuing a craft that has been shared from one generation to the next.

When we create, we’re not just creating with fabric and tools. We’re creating with history, memory, culture, and care.

Art isn’t only what hangs on a wall. Sometimes, it’s what we wear, mend, and pass on.

What does sewing mean to you?

Sew Easy - a series where I share tips and tricks that will make your sewing journey a lot easier.

Adding elastic to a waistband is one of those simple techniques that makes such a big difference to the fit and comfort of a garment. In this video, I’m sharing my favourite way to do it so you can get a neat, secure finish that’s made to last. Happy sewing!

What if we’ve been thinking about mending all wrong?

Maybe it was never just about making clothes last longer.

Maybe every stitch carries something else with it—care, patience, memories and skills that were once passed from one generation to the next.

I’d love to know your thoughts after you’ve swiped through.

What’s the first thing someone taught you to repair?

These jeans have been through a lot. The knees were completely blown out (they already had ‘fashion rips’ but got too big!) they’ve stretched a bit too big over time, but they still had plenty of life left in them.

I patched the rips using scraps from a previous project—a patchwork waistcoat made from old tablecloths and reclaimed fabrics. It’s exactly why I never throw fabric scraps away. You never know when the tiniest offcuts will end up giving an old favourite a whole new lease of life.

Nothing wasted, nothing perfect, just making what I already have work a little bit longer.

Just because someone *can* do an alteration doesn’t always mean they *should*.

As a seamstress, there are a few jobs I’ll always turn down—and it’s not because I don’t want to help. It’s because I’d rather be honest and give you the best possible advice than promise something that won’t give the result you’re hoping for.

Do you agree with my reasons, or is there one you think I should reconsider? Let me know!

If your lightweight fabric keeps getting pulled down into your sewing machine and chewed up, don’t worry—it’s usually a simple fix! ✂️

The right needle, holding your thread tails, using tissue paper or wash-away stabiliser, and making a few small adjustments can make all the difference.

Have you ever had a fabric that just refused to behave? Tell me what it was in the comments, and I’ll help you troubleshoot it!

The more messages I receive from this community, the more I realise there might be something much bigger hiding in the simple act of picking up a needle and thread.

I’m curious if you’ll feel the same after watching.

Who first taught you to mend something? 🧵

This message got me thinking about something I hear all the time.

It’s not really about one person, it’s about how we value clothes, skills, and the work that goes on behind the scenes.
