Should every piece of marine debris be removed immediately?

Most of us would instinctively say yes.

But underwater, things can become more complicated over time. Bottles, cans and lost gear can sometimes become homes for fish, crustaceans and other marine species.

It raises an interesting question...
At what point do we remove trash if we also risk disturbing the life that has adapted around it?

Ghost nets don’t stop fishing when they’re lost.

They continue trapping and injuring marine life for year, drifting through the sea or becoming caught on wrecks and reefs.

During a week on Rügen, fourth element Pioneer and the team recovered more than a tonne of discarded nets and fishing gear, helping protect marine life and underwater habitats in the Baltic Sea.

This work is exhausting, technical and often emotional, but every net removed makes a difference below the surface.
