Flat Periwinkle shells! 🐚 🧡💛🐌 😍

They are some of the most colourful inhabitants of our rocky shores. Living amongst brown seaweeds such as bladderwrack, these tiny snails can be found in an astonishing variety of colours, including bright yellow, orange, green, brown and almost black, with many displaying bands or mottled patterns.This colour variation helps them blend into different seaweeds, reducing the risk of being spotted by predators. Slow-moving but perfectly adapted to life between the tides, they spend their days grazing on microscopic algae coating the seaweed.

It’s Atlantic Mackerel season! I love the zebra like markings they have 🥰 I haven’t been out fishing much this year which is unacceptable really considering the lovely weather we’ve been having.

Sailing into Syllingar ⚔️

I’ve been doing a deep dive into Old Norse history recently, and it inspired this little illustration of a Viking longship sailing past the Eastern Isles under a full moon. The Vikings knew the Isles of Scilly as Syllingar (ᛋᚢᛚᛁᚾᚴᛅᛦ), and with the islands sitting at the western entrance to the English Channel, they would have been a familiar landmark for Norse sailors crossing between Ireland, Cornwall, Wales and Brittany. The medieval Orkneyinga Saga even records a raid on Syllingar, although it’s likely Viking crews had been passing these shores long before then. Living on St Martin’s, I often find myself imagining what it must have been like standing here a thousand years ago, watching great longships with striped sails gliding silently past the Eastern Isles on another voyage into the Atlantic. History has a wonderful way of making the landscape around us feel alive.

A foggy week on the islands! 🌫️

I’ve always loved the atmosphere that comes with these foggy days. The world feels a little quieter, a little wilder, and every now and then you’ll hear the Round Island foghorn sounding off somewhere out at sea.

It might not be the sunshine visitors hope for, but there’s something undeniably magical about it.

“Jaws” big ones… 🦈

An incredible afternoon spent out on the water with this magnificent basking shark spotted around the Eastern Isles by passengers aboard the Scillonian.

The sheer size of this shark was unbelievable. Despite being the second-largest fish in the world, basking sharks are true gentle giants, feeding on tiny plankton as they glide gracefully through our waters.

Moments like these are a reminder of just how special the Isles of Scilly are, with wildlife encounters that never fail to take your breath away. 😱💪❤️

The Daymark has long stood watch over St Martin’s, guiding sailors home and keeping a quiet eye on island life. Over time, I’ve come to think of it as St Martin’s own little mascot, always there in the background, greeting arrivals, seeing off departures, and standing proudly through every season.

This little character is my playful take on the island’s most recognisable landmark. Carrying the flag for St Martin’s wherever it goes. ❤️💪

Thanks to everyone that has visited my little stall 🥰❤️
I’ve had to keep it closed twice this past week due to less than ideal weather conditions. The large stone at the bottom of my stall sure did a great job at keeping it anchored down yesterday! 🌬️😅
