Another rare, and in some respects, an unheard of item.
This is a 1940 dated MK II Artificial Horizon. Produced pre WWII, this gauge is listed in the 1937 edition of the Air Ministry AP 1275. Designed to be interchangeable with the MK I version. The MK II could be found fitted to Spitfires MK I's and MK II's as highlighted in the illustrated guide to British Aircraft Equipment 1939-1945 Volume I.
This is also borne out by the fact that this particular example was removed from Spitfire P7350 before it was used for filming purposes in the Battle of Britain movie in 1969. The gauge was one of a number of items purchased from a family member whose relative worked in the props department for the movie
The AM Crown and RAF Stores reference number 6A/711 is clearly marked on the rear casing.
I've only ever seen one of these before and that is currently listed for sale on another Spitfire related website at £795.
This unit is for sale at £450 at www.spitfireparts.co.uk
