Stewardship is usually spoken of in the past tense.

Old courses. Old customs. Things inherited, kept in good order and handed on.

But every old thing was new once.

For the final day of The Highland Invitational, we returned to Cabot Highlands to play Old Petty… a new course with the rather unfair advantage of already feeling remembered.

The lines are still being learned. The bounces have yet to acquire mythology. The stories have not yet been improved through repetition.

That will come.

Places become traditions through the people who care for them, play them and eventually hand them on.

At 135, Glenmuir understands the arrangement.

In Scotland, the game is never really owned. It is held in good order for whoever comes next.

At Royal Dornoch, it was briefly in our care.

The course was left in good order. The scorecards were another matter.

Scotland gave golf to the world. It seemed only right to gather a few of those now entrusted with its care.

Clubs were selected. Of course, a piper was appointed. Whisky from Tomatin Whisky was provided.

Postcards from the first day.

The pipes carried. The light stayed with us. The game was in good hands.

First, the invitation.

Golf has always depended upon its custodians. These are those who teach it, tend it, organise it and quietly pass it on.

In our 135th year, we invited some of them north.

He said he was only going out for three.

That was sometime before the light changed, the clubhouse emptied and the Crossford hoodie became the warmest thing left on the course.

A touch of cashmere.
A few holes after hours.
No card submitted.

The sheep behind the wool in this particular crew neck was raised in a field beside a the wood-panelled clubhouse of Lanark, only some hundred feet from the Glenmuir factory itself.

Each afternoon, Ethel the sheep would watch through the windows and learned the essentials: arrive early, speak quietly and never remove a good sweater before taking your seat at the refectory tables at luncheon.

Ethel was eventually proposed for membership. But it seems her wool got in first.

Three different club selections. Three different performance shirts. Three entirely different outcomes.

Dress for the one you meant to hit.

A few days in Florence, getting closer to the people, processes and details behind our Merino

Because good craftsmanship is often found in the things you don’t immediately see.
