A weekend where names are added to honour boards, old stories are retold, and… for a brief moment… handicaps become a topic of unusually detailed discussion.

The Club Championship is one of golf’s oldest traditions, yet few stop to think where it came from. Long before Stableford points, WHS and GPS watches, clubs gathered once a year to answer a much simpler question:

Who is the best golfer in the club?

Here’s a brief history of one of the game’s great annual rituals.

The Committee would like to remind members that all merino garments intended for use on or near historic links property must be submitted for quiet consideration no later than two weeks before The Open Championship, unless the garment has already been approved under the Previous Season Wool Understanding, in which case it may proceed directly to Window Standing, provided the wearer looks suitably concerned.

Not every shot produces the desired outcome. Especially on links.

The response, however, remains important.

Visible frustration is kept to a minimum. A brief shake of the head is acceptable. A quiet exhale and a blank stare at the shoreline may also be permitted… and actually says plenty.

The knitwear and outerwear should remain entirely uninvolved.
