🎳 Strike! 🎳

One of our favourite challenges from the show so far was the free motion (the technique of drawing onto fabric with your sewing machine) and appliqué (The technique of applying fabric shapes to a larger piece of fabric to create an image) bowling shirt challenge which saw the bees 🐝 making bowling shirts with motifs relevant to their hobbies or interests, using free motion and appliqué to add relevant images to the garments. We saw delicious dinners 🍽️, precious pups 🐶 and super sea-life 🐳, and the range of images and styles displayed was a great example of how these techniques are so versatile, and can yield all kinds of different results!

Want to introduce more unique elements into your sewing 🪡 projects, or try out a new medium building on skills you already have?

Free motion machine embroidery is a way of ‘drawing’ onto fabric with your sewing machine, giving you unlimited options for image-making which can then be applied to your sewing projects in other areas of the craft! Machine embroidery can be an art form in and of itself, but you can also incorporate it into dressmaking, soft furnishings and any other subcategory of sewing you can think of! This is a great way of including images 🖼️ or messages in your work, and its gestural handmade aesthetic highlights the 1 or 1 nature of indie sewing in the coolest way!

This is a great session for people with a knowledge of basic sewing techniques and is only £52.50!

There is still space remaining on our Learn to Sew in a Day cushion workshop on Saturday 15th! This is a very popular day workshop that’s a perfect introduction to machine sewing for the curious 🧐 or inexperienced 👶! You’ll join a small class being guided through machine setup and operation, essential sewing techniques, sewing zips and buttons! These are all super transferrable skills you can take into future projects. You’ll also have made your own cushion, and will leave with the knowledge needed to do it again! 💜

MERCHANT & MILLS RESTOCK!

We have just restocked our selection of Merchant & Mills patterns 💚

Merchant & Mills are one of our all-time favourite pattern makers (not to mention the incredible fabric they produce). Their patterns are always stylish, timeless and infinitely wearable, and they’re a safe bet in terms of instructions, fit and overall quality. 👌

In this new delivery were two ✌️NEW patterns!

The NEVIS skirt is a super stylish and practical skirt that’s incredibly versatile, great for informal gatherings, DIY, hiking, and loads more! You can also choose between two different versions of the skirt, to better suit your specific needs. 🗻

The SOMMER dress is another absolute classic, a simple summer dress that’s flattering, light and airy. When we’re thinking about what’s most important to us in our wardrobe staples often it’s more about practicality and simplicity than flashy details or flamboyant features - this dress is a great example of that! 🌞

Our young sewists are constantly amazing 🤯 us with what they’re capable of!

We wanted to stop by to share some pics 📸 from our last regular sewing session of the term, these sessions are for general sewing support and the students are all working on their own projects, so there’s always loads of different cool stuff getting made at the same time! In this one we had a beloved bag getting relined, free motion embroidery, an embroidered panel, a pair of trousers and an appliquéd baby t shirt on the worktops!

We have a constant programme of kids’ sessions, including workshops, courses and weekly sewing sessions during termtime. Check out our Summer offerings on the last slide! You can check out everything we currently have lined up on our website, and keep an eye 👁️ out for more announcements!

On the 15th of August we will be running our Learn to Sew in a Day cushion workshop! 🛋️

This is an opportunity for complete beginners or people with a small amount of experience to get confident with basic sewing techniques and make something along the way! 💜

You’ll get used to using a computerised 🤖 sewing machine, learn how to make neat seams, button holes, and how to sew on buttons. 🪡

Materials and patterns are included in the price of the course (a steal at £115 for the day!)

You’ve probably seen 👀 that we’re offering loads of kids sessions over the summer!

Learn to Sew on the 14th of August is a one-day beginner level course teaching the basics of machine sewing. Participants will spend the day making their own tote bag, a cool and practical item they can actually use! Fabric and patterns are included in the price of the workshop (which is only £105 for the day!) and the patterns can be taken away and used to make more bags at home! 🏠 

You’ll learn about machine safety 👷 and setup, sewing buttons 🪡 and button holes, hand stitching, interfacing and zips!

We are also offering an exclusive deal on this workshop - if you book two ✌️ spaces for the workshop, the second will be half price! 💸

This weekend, Sarah Laws of My Handmade Wardrobe - Sarah Laws will be joining us for a ✌️ two-day course in pattern adjustment!

Sarah will be teaching participants everything they need to know to adjust commercial sewing patterns for a better, personalised fit! 👌

You probably got into garment sewing because you wanted to make clothing that aligns with your aesthetic and fits your body better than what’s available on the high street. Many of us have had the experience of being disappointed 😞 with the results of a sewing project using a commercial pattern, and that’s why we run this workshop. No more gaping, dragging or pulling, you’ll be able to ensure that what you get at the end of your hours of hard work looks the way you imagined! 😍
