Set in the streets of Brazil, this collection represents hope after pain. Not just hope after one of the darkest events in the history of mankind, the slave trade, but hope for all who are tied by chains in their everyday lives. With the main inspiration the poem “Slave Ship” by Castro Alves, the colors and fabrics are to represent the emotions on the poem; there is the excitement, horror, pain and hope. Denim represents resistance, resilience needed for hard work during the many tasks of life, leather represents the skin, suffering whipping and physical pain but the chiffon silk, represents the lightness of the wind and the white silk, the freedom. The laser cuts, looking through prison bars, you can see the light and feel the breeze. These cuts, inspired on the eight points of the compass and the stars, give direction during dark nights. The statement piece, a dress, woven denim and rivets where inspired by were torture weapons were stowed in slave ships, in chests of woven ‘bamboo’.
