Good news for Leicestershire residents today, especially those in Anstey.

The Government has announced that the Local Government Reorganisation proposals for Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland will be paused and reviewed.

This follows months of campaigning by local residents, Conservative councillors and MPs who have raised serious concerns about plans that could have seen large parts of Leicestershire absorbed into an expanded Leicester City Council area.

We want to thank everyone who signed petitions, attended meetings, contacted their representatives and made their voices heard. Today's announcement shows that when communities come together and speak up, they can make a real difference.

While we welcome this decision, we must remember that this is only a pause.

The threat to our county boundaries and our Leicestershire identity has not completely gone away, and we will continue working hard to ensure the views of local people are properly heard before any further decisions are made.

Many residents have told us that they value being part of Leicestershire and do not want these changes forced upon them. We share those concerns and remain committed to protecting our communities and our county's identity.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this campaign so far. There is still more work to do, but today is an important step in the right direction.

Leicestershire County Council leader Dan Harrison said he planned to send a "pre-action protocol" letter to the government asking for the reasoning and evidence supporting the decision.

The city expansion is part of the Labour government's plan to reshape the political map of Leicestershire and Rutland by replacing 10 existing councils with two new local authorities.
