🌒 Partial Solar Eclipse – Wednesday 12 August 2026
On Wednesday 12 August 2026, people across the UK and Ireland will have the opportunity to see a partial solar eclipse, with around 88–96% of the Sun covered by the Moon in some areas. The eclipse will reach its peak after 7pm.
While partial solar eclipses occur every few years, this one is particularly special. It will provide the greatest coverage of the Sun visible from the UK since the total solar eclipse of 1999.
☀️ How to View the Solar Eclipse Safely
Never look directly at the Sun, even during an eclipse. Ordinary sunglasses do not provide sufficient protection and can cause serious damage to your eyes.
* ❌ Do not look directly at the Sun without proper solar eye protection.
* ❌ Do not view the Sun through a telescope, binoculars, camera or phone, as the concentrated sunlight can cause severe and permanent eye damage.
* 👓 If you want to look directly at the eclipse, use purpose-made eclipse glasses with certified solar filters. Look for the appropriate CE or UKCA marking and check the glasses carefully for scratches or damage before use.
🔭 Are There Other Ways to Watch the Eclipse?
Yes! There are several safe ways to enjoy the eclipse without looking directly at the Sun:
* 📺 Watch a live we**am stream or television broadcast– an easy and completely safe way to follow the eclipse.
* 📦 Try a pinhole projector – make a small hole in a piece of cardboard and, with your back to the Sun, hold it so that sunlight passes through the hole and projects an image of the Sun onto another piece of paper or card. A cardboard box can also be used to create a simple projector and allows you to safely watch the eclipse progress.
* 👓Use certified eclipse glasses with specially designed solar filters if you wish to view the eclipse directly. Make sure they carry the appropriate CE or UKCA marking and are free from scratches or damage.
