Kilts on the Coast Kilts on the Coast brings bespoke kilt making to the South East Coast. Trained at Keith Kilt and Te It has taken me 25 years to put those thoughts into action.

In 1993, whilst serving with the Royal Navy in Hong Kong, I visited the Osborne Barracks open day where the 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) were stationed. I walked into a room to see a soldier kilt making and thought that would be the perfect job for me. I attended the Keith Kilt and Textile Centre, Morayshire for the past year where I learnt how to work out the metreage, mea

suring clients, pleat according to sett, stripe and block, sew different weights of fabric and understand how to put in the shaping. I learnt a few secrets along the way from Paula Duncan, our tutor, which will give my kilts a fantastic swing when walking. I took my assessment in December 2019 and obtained my Scottish vocational qualification in July 2019 after taking my time to produce the photographic evidence. It is now time to put my knowledge to good use making beautiful, hand made kilts for clients in the south. I will continue to visit Scotland as there is a lot more to learn and I enjoy my working holidays. If you don’t want to travel all the way to Scotland for a kilt then contact me!

This ladies kilt is made from Dugdale and Brothers lightweight tartan, made in Huddersfield. The tartan could be pleated in four ways. My client chose blue block, with the blue stripe as centre front. This kilt has two layers of canvas for a firm construction. The Petal Wish Liberty lining picks up the colours of the tartan.

Thought I had better wear my kilt on Kilt Day at Wickham Festival but I was disappointed there weren’t more participants. I am wearing my new socks and brogues too though you can’t really see them. Might make myself some flashes too... Had a great time; busy now getting samples for prospective clients.

This Mathieson Ancient Hunting kilt was made as an heirloom using a dear late grandfather’s tartan. In 18 months the wearer has grown considerably and is using the last strap hole. It is time to increase the aprons to their maximum width and let down the hem. With bespoke kilts fabric is hidden in the Box and Spring pleats and waistband to allow for future adjustment.

Had an enjoyable time at The Garden Show 2019, Stansted House. Met some interesting people with the possibility of future work. Some people came up with suggestions for products they would like to see which was very useful. Met one chap from Fife who worked on minesweepers with my late dad which was an unexpected coincidence and made me feel quite emotional. I am looking forward to making a MacDonald kilt for a wedding next year, so exciting! You feel part of the wedding. So there is lots to look forward to. Thanks to everyone who visited, chatted, or admired my work and added to the event.

The Easter rabbits proved popular. Some customers asked for them as doorstops so they are being made part-filled with non-toxic sand to give them weight. This will make them useful as well as decorative. They would be ideal as a tartan present for a new born’s nursery.
