Japan’s N A N G A have a long history of cold-weather comfort. Founded back in the 1940s to make futons, by the 80s they were crafting extreme-condition sleeping bags for some of Japan’s finest outdoor brands before breaking out on their own in ‘95.

Named after the notorious Himalayan peak of Nanga Parbat, the brand applies that 80-odd years of experience to make big winter down jackets that don’t feel like big winter down jackets, packing in serious warmth without the weight.

When writing about Rayon Vert it’s easy to get sidetracked with the prints and the labels and their amazing website and the long-sleeved tees that look like ‘90s PC game box-art, but all that maybe overlooks the other, slightly more subtle, details that makes the brand so interesting.

They’re working with historic Tuscan mills on high-tech recycled wool fabrics.

They’re harnessing the natural powers of merino wool to craft cold-weather fleece perfection.

They’re organising chess tournaments (and making chess-board bandanas for the ultimate ultralight Sicilian Defence).

They’re making all their clothing in Italy, all in a 200km radius of their Milan studio.

And lastly, they’re actually out there, hiking through the Alps and bike-packing across the Atlas Mountains, testing this stuff in unforgiving landscapes where kit matters.

We could go on. This lot are truly out on their own, and for that we salute them.

Created only a few years back as a year-round alternative to Bedrock Sandals’s zero-drop all-terrain sandals, the singular Mountain Clog has already catapulted itself firmly into ‘Outsiders favourite’ territory thanks to that winning combination of easy-going, slip-on shape and functional off-road details.

The Magma 50L Backpack from Haglöfs is a lightweight multi-day trekking backpack from Haglöfs. With 50 litres of space, it’s definitely big, but thanks to that carefully-considered shape and surprisingly light steel frame, it doesn’t feel like a big backpack once it’s on, with the plentiful compartments and that front mesh stuff pocket helping to distribute the weight well. The removable hip-belt is a useful detail too-adding extra support, and easy-reach pocket space for the stuff you need close to hand.

Our first autumn delivery from Montbell has landed, and it’s a big one. There’s a lot to talk about here, but the main focus is definitely lightweight fleece, with countless ingenious variations on the theme of ‘clothes that keep you warm, but not too warm’.

That means ultralight layers, reversible jackets and ergonomic sweatshirts, as well as packable wind-shells, merino wool hiking socks, patterned bandanas and the ideal winter hat for the modern-day Holden Caulfield.

Yep, Montbell have done it again.

Legendary Bavarian bootmakers Hanwag - Outdoor Footwear might just have made the perfect walking shoe here. The Gritstone II XC GTX combines waterproof Gore-Tex lined uppers with a reassuringly chunky Vibram Ultragrip sole to make a prime off-road design for when you want something a bit more substantial than trail-runners, but a bit more nimble than hiking boots.

They’re not the lightest, and they’re not the fastest, but if you’re looking for a dependable, hard-wearing pair of all-terrain shoes that are built to last, you’re in the right place. They’re resoleable too, so they’ll be around for a good while.
