115 years ago today , the city was in the middle of a General Transport Strike that had paralysed the city with 250,000 workers coming out on strike.

Only 2 years before, sectarian riots had blighted the city with 3200 catholics forced to flee their homes in the Scotland Rd, Kirkdale and Everton areas.
During the strike, class solidarity temporarily overcame Liverpool's deep-rooted Protestant-Catholic sectarian divide. Workers from Protestant areas like Everton and Catholic areas like Scotland Road marched together, uniting orange and green ribbons on their banners and setting aside years of fierce religious feuds to fight for better pay and union recognition

The solidarity was that strong that home secretary Winston Churchill sent gunboats up the Mersey in attempt to quell the uprising.
3500 troops were also deployed and claimed the lives of two strikers shot dead after opening fire on a crowd on Vauxhall rd.
