Beauty of the Torch Festival 🔥

Photographed in Meigu, Liangshan during the Yi Torch Festival, this young woman was preparing to take part in a local beauty pageant celebrating Yi culture and tradition.

Dressed in her finest ceremonial attire, adorned with intricate silver jewellery and the iconic Yi headdress, she carries with her generations of craftsmanship, heritage and pride.

Her smile reflects more than beauty alone — it speaks of confidence, identity and the vibrant spirit of a culture that continues to thrive in the mountains of Southwest China.

Silver, story and heritage.

The Elder of Butuo

Wrapped in a traditional Yi headscarf, an elderly Yi man sits in the winter sun of Butuo County, Liangshan, quietly smoking to***co he grew himself.

His weathered face tells a story of mountain life — of hard work, resilience, and a deep connection to the land. In many Yi villages, growing to***co for personal use was once a common part of daily life, passed down through generations alongside traditions, language and customs.

There is dignity in his gaze, and a lifetime of experience etched into every line of his face.

A window into another world.

For one week in Notting Hill, Flames of Love: Song of Mountains brought together fashion, photography, music and craftsmanship inspired by the Yi people of Liangshan, Southwest China (Sichuan Province).

This installation featured our Royal Crane ensemble, shining in the gallery window like a piece of wearable art — a meeting of Eastern heritage, contemporary design and storytelling.

As the exhibition comes to a close, we are grateful to everyone who visited, supported the artists, discovered Yi culture, and helped us raise awareness for the Go, Sister! project supporting girls’ education in the mountains of Liangshan.

Some exhibitions end, but the stories continue.

Adornment of Meigu

Photographed in Meigu, Liangshan in 2018, this portrait captures a Yi woman dressed in her traditional attire after a day of fieldwork.

Her silver jewellery and Nanhong agate earrings are more than adornment — they are expressions of identity, heritage and pride, passed down through generations in the mountains of Southwest China.

Part of our Flames of Love: Song of Mountains exhibition, this photograph celebrates the beauty, resilience and cultural richness of the Yi people.

Our exhibition, Song of Mountains, Flames of Love, brings together photography, fashion, art, music and cultural storytelling inspired by the Yi people of Southwest China (Sichuan Province).

This photograph is one of a collection documenting the lives, traditions and spirit of the Liangshan mountains — stories of resilience, community and hope.

We are open until Tuesday (2 June) at our Notting Hill exhibition, and would love to welcome you before the show closes.

More than an exhibition, this project is also a way of giving back. A portion of proceeds from artwork and product sales will support Go, Sister!, helping girls in remote mountain communities return to education and pursue brighter futures.

A Yi Mother of Liangshan.

A Yi woman carries her child upon her back, dressed in the traditional clothing of the Liangshan mountains.

A sewing needle rests quietly on the brim of her cap — a practical detail of daily life, ready to mend worn garments at any moment. In her gaze lives both resilience and tenderness, woven into the enduring rhythms of mountain culture.

Photographed by Gill in Liangshan, Sichuan Province in Southwest China, this portrait offers a glimpse into everyday life in the mountains, where strength, care and tradition are passed from one generation to the next.

Through his lens, Gill documents the people, stories and landscapes of Liangshan with remarkable intimacy, preserving moments of beauty and humanity that are rarely seen beyond the mountains.

This work is currently on view as part of Song of Mountains, Flames of Love: Art, Design, Fashion and Culture Exhibition in Notting Hill, London, until 2 June.

Our Song of Mountains — Yi Art, Design, Fashion & Culture Exhibition is now open in Notting Hill and runs until 2 June.

Inspired by the rich heritage of the Yi people from the Liangshan Mountains of Southwest China, Sichuan Province, this multidisciplinary exhibition brings together photography, art, fashion, music and traditional craftsmanship.

For Skylence .the.designer, the exhibition is also a personal homage to her Yi maternal heritage and an exploration of the cultural roots that continue to inspire her creative journey.

Discover powerful photography from the mountains of Liangshan, contemporary artworks, Yi-inspired fashion, traditional craftsmanship, and a newly released Yi music album, all coming together to tell a story of culture, identity and resilience.

The exhibition also supports our charity initiative — Go, Sister!, helping underprivileged girls from remote mountain communities return to education and pursue brighter futures.
