Long sleeves, back on.

Bamboo pyjamas are the one thing in this shop nobody argues about at bedtime, and the long sets are what carry you from now until spring.

Tea Party and Minecraft, both Bellabu Bear, both OEKO-TEX certified, and both cut snug, which is deliberate rather than a sizing accident. Sleepwear rules mean pyjamas are either treated with flame retardants or fitted close to the body. Bellabu Bear chose the second, so the bamboo stays free of the chemicals.

Sizes 3T to 7/8. Size up if they are between sizes.

We handed him a colour chart. He picked this.

Lava orange, because apparently the point of a rain jacket is being visible from the other side of a muddy field. Oaki build a proper shell: seam-sealed, waterproof to 5,000mm, a hood with a brim that keeps the drips off his face, and zipped pockets lined for whatever he decides is treasure that day.

Tested in Canadian rain, which does not mess about, and on a few school runs this month. Still going. He also picked the navy, so now he has both.

£45, sizes 4/5 to 8/9. It packs down small enough to live in the bag, which is where a rain jacket is actually useful.

We stocked this one because we wanted it ourselves. Not a very sophisticated buying strategy, but an honest one.

The Felix sling from Hindbag, dark grey denim. Slim enough to disappear, deep enough to be useful, and it sits flat across your back so nothing swings. Quiet Friday, slow lake, old dog.

A raincoat is not an emergency purchase.

Every year it goes the same way. The first proper downpour arrives, last year's coat is halfway up their arms, and something beige and plasticky gets bought at 8pm in a panic.

We would rather you bought one good one. Properly waterproof, hooded, soft enough that they will actually put it on, and sized so it still fits in February.

Rain is not a surprise in this country. Buy for it like you knew it was coming.

Most kids' raincoats are apologetic. Muted, sensible, designed to disappear. These are the opposite. Lava orange, valley green, navy, and you will spot them across a playground in the rain, which is rather the point.

They are a proper shell underneath the colour. Seam-sealed, waterproof to 5,000mm, a hood with a brim deep enough to keep the drips off a face, a waterproof zip, elastic cuffs, and zipped pockets lined for whatever gets picked up on the way home. It packs down small enough to live in the bag, which is the only reason a raincoat ever actually gets worn.

First morning back. New shoes he did not choose, a polo top he did not choose, and one bag he absolutely did.

Back to school is a long list of decisions someone else already made. The shirt, the jumper, the precise shade of grey.
