The great Windsor Castle was built in the 11th century after the Norman invasion by William the Conqueror. Henry III built a luxurious royal palace within the castle, and Edward III went further, rebuilding the palace to produce an even grander set of buildings in what would become "the most expensive secular building project of the entire middle ages" in England. Edward's core design lasted through the Tudor period, during which Henry VII and Elizabeth I made increasing use of the castle as a royal court and centre for diplomatic entertainment. Windsor castle survived the Tumultuous Period and the English Civil war, when it was used as a military headquarters for parliamentary forces and a prison for Charles I.

Castle number II on our tour of Great Britain is the magnificent Kenilworth Castle, Warwickshire, England, which was built in 1120 and inhabited by Henry II. The castle was the subject of the six-month long Siege of Kenilworth in 1266, believed to be the longest siege in English history, and formed a base for Lancastrian operations in the Wars of the Roses. The historic castle was also the scene of the removal of Edward II from the English throne because of the French insult to Henry V in 1414.

Castle number II on our tour of Great Britain is the magnificent Dover Castle which was also known as the 'Key to Britain' because of its defensive significance throughout history. Standing high above the White Cliffs, the Castle has guarded our shores for over 900 years. Steeped in history and several re-builds one of its modern moments of brilliance was during the Second World War in 1939 when it's tunnels were converted first into an air-raid shelter and then later into a military command centre and underground hospital.
