Is there anything worse than dealing with early morning wakes (between 5-6am)?!

We were dealing with this for months with L…I wish I knew what I do today.

There are so many causes to early morning wakes, it’s a minefield and it can take a lot of tweaking until you figure out exactly which factor was driving it.

Here are a list of common things to consider:

✨ It may seem counterintuitive but the majority of the time, it’s because your child is OVERtired rather than undertired. Try bringing their bedtime earlier for a week and see what happens! 💡Rarely is it because they’re undertired but if they’re getting too much daytime sleep, it’s possible

✨ Part of whether they’re overtired is if they’re getting sufficient daytime sleep. Take a look at how many naps they’re having

✨ Are they following the recommended Awake Windows for their age range?

✨ Are they eating enough during the day depending on the age of your little one? It’s common to still need night feeds for younger infants and if they’re not yet well established on solids!

✨ Are they self settling to sleep? Our bodies are in the lightest stage of sleep from around 4 or 5am so being able to fall back asleep themselves is critical to getting the extra snooze

✨ If your little one has a morning nap, make sure it’s not too long or too short…it has a knock on effect to the naps during the rest of the day and bedtime

✨ Have they been waking early for so long now that it’s become a habit? What do you do when they wake up and are you reinforcing this behaviour i.e. bringing them into your bed, starting screen time or playtime etc? If they wake before their expected wake up time, keep them in their cot/bed until it’s time to start the day!

✨ Is it too light? One of the downside to the summer is how much earlier it gets bright outside now. If you don’t have black out curtains, the light creeps into the room from 5am and can lead to earlier wakes!

✨ Our digestive systems start the day around 5am too so if there’s any discomfort which could be colic/reflux/wind/food sensitivities related, or if they’ve recently started weaning then it could be tied into the early wakings!

For those who are currently going through middle of the night wakes, there are a number of factors that could be causing this!

Aside from the obvious teething and illnesses, if your little one is consistently waking up during the night and has been for a while, then check on the below points:

💤 Are they falling asleep themselves? If they’re receiving help to get to sleep then they wake up, they expect exactly the same!

💤 Do they have any sleep aids/props? This could be feeding, a dummy, sling or pram…all of these become a hinderance as they become reliant on sucking or movement.

💤 Are they in the right sleep environment? Is the temperature right (recommended 16-20 degrees), is the room completely dark, is it noisy in the house or are you using a white noise machine to block out any interference?

💤 Are they overtired or undertired? Check my earlier posts to see if your little one is within the recommended awake windows guidelines. Make small, gradual adjustments if needed and stick to it for a few days to determine if it has worked!

💤 Are they hungry? Depending on the age of your little one, it’s common for younger babies to wake during the night for feeds. But if your child is on 3 solid meals a day, they are capable of sleeping through the night

💤 Are they dealing with any discomfort or medical conditions? This could be something like reflux or sleep apnea. It’s important to address these issues before focussing on sleep training/coaching.

Please leave a comment below if you’re going through any of the points above and have any further questions!

Lovely way to end the week!
Rian did so well with his transition to his own ‘big bed’ and bedroom - I enjoyed working with Dad on this case and hearing his updates in the lead up to this success story!

I worked with him to mentally prep Rian to wanting to be in his bedroom and be excited about the new set up.

It can be tricky working with older infants as they are full of personality and determination for things to be the way they want but there are plenty of tactics to still make them feel under control

A common question I get asked is how do we know if a baby is overtired and what happens?

❌ If you wait for signs that your baby is tired and then put them down, it’s often too late and they’re already overtired.

❌ Overtiredness makes it much more difficult for your baby to settle and fall asleep without any assistance. It is also when you find your baby waking up right at the end of a sleep cycle!

There’s a fine line between tired and overtired.
Signs of being ready for bed include:

✅ a little yawn
✅ rubbing of eyes
✅ blank stare/staring into space

✨ The best way to ensure your little one doesn’t end up in an overtired state is to follow the right awake windows!

A lot of recent new mum’s or mum’s to be! Hopefully you find these 5S’s useful in the early weeks 😊

1️⃣ Swaddling: this helps calm the baby and mimic the womb environment. Babies experience a Startle/Moro reflex when they are startled which causes their arms/legs to fling out

2️⃣ Side/Stomach position: whilst we should always lie babies on their backs when they’re sleeping per the SIDS guidelines…when you’re holding and calming them, you can put baby on their side or front

3️⃣ Shhh’ing: you can make the Shhh noise or have white/pink noise machine near them to again, mimic the calm, womb environment

4️⃣ Swinging: gently swing or sway baby as it creates a similar sensation to she they were inside you!

5️⃣ Sucking: whether you use a clean finger or use a dummy/pacifier, this not only calms a baby down quickly but it can also enable the suck reflex which is great on their digestive system too!

✨ Do you have a newborn? Have you tried any of the 5 S’s?

Our little one is teething at the moment! The final molars are coming through hard and fast ☹️

Here are some tips if you’re in the same boat:

✨ Expect some disruption to their sleep and them settling for the night. Don’t worry about sleep coaching for now…give them all the love, comfort and cuddles they need until it passes (which is typically just a few days)! I don’t go too extreme to undo all the good bedtime habits but like tonight, I stayed next to her and patted her till she fell asleep

✨ Highly recommend a teething gel/powder. We use gel as it works a treat but try and test what works for your little one!

✨ Also recommend freezing a clean flannel for them to chew on

✨ I also have Sophie the Giraffe and a teething brush in her cot - we’ve been using both since she started teething. Both work great in different ways - she chooses which one she wants!

✨ If things are really rough, you can provide paracetamol. I give a dose of Calpol 30 mins before bedtime to let it kick in

Save this post for a rainy day 😊

Was a pleasure working with Seth’s mum and many thanks for your kind words and testimonial 🥰

Here we were resolving bedtime struggles with a 28 month old toddler where he wouldn’t sleep without a parent beside him and when he woke up during the night.
He had also transitioned to a toddler bed and was therefore running into his parents bed each time he woke up during the night - this took a lot of energy and time out of his Mum’s night!

His 1 nap schedule made his bedtime too late in the evening which didn’t work for dad as he has to sleep early to start his work day and so his naps were dropped which caused middle of the night wake and early morning wakes.

I worked with Seth’s mum to personalise an approach that helped him self settle in his own bed, prevent him from ending up in their bed and to help Seth recuperate some lost sleep due to his dropped naps!

I’m so pleased to hear how well Seth is doing now and that the parents can now enjoy their early evening and spend some time together! 🥰

Drop me a comment if your are experiencing any or all of the above with your little one.
