‘The Burning Monk' was taken by Malcom Brown in June 1963, capturing the moment Buddhist monk, Thích Quang Duc set himself on fire which would lead to his death at a busy intersection in Saigon, Vietnam.

He set himself alight to protest and fight oppression against increasingly harsher laws against the majority Buddhist, Vietnamese population. He mentioned that Buddhism needed martyrs.

The protest was against South Vietnamese leader, Ngo Dinh Diem's government who promoted pro Catholic policies and discriminatory Buddhist laws. In particular, the banning of the Buddhist flag, two days after the leader held a very public ceremony where he openly displayed Catholic Crosses.

Diem had declared Vietnam a Catholic country even though 70-90% of the population was Buddhist.

The growing resentment of Buddhists under Diem was one of the underlying issues of South Vietnam and eventually led to a coup to put in place a leader who also cared for the Buddhist majority.

John F Kennedy went on record saying that no one photo has ever generated so much emotion globally.
