LoMo - short for low MOQ, is Pattern Project's very own clever automatic cutting machine. Originally built for single-layer cutting, it can now cut up to eight layers of fabric. It's very easy to use and weighs just over 70kgs. A head-mounted low-powered laser helps mark piece numbers to help keep track of unique items. A 12000 hole vacuum bed keeps fabrics stable and ready for cutting. Next year, we are planning to launch a crowd-funding campaign to sell the machine to micro-factories championing local production. Do get in touch via DM if you are interested! Mailing list coming soon!

We have aimed to present pieces which contain ‘nothing new.’ In a world of preservation emergency, it seems impossible to constantly shift our focus to the ‘new’. In an act of preservation, each fabric we have used has come from dead-stock from LVMH re-examining what we already have as a gateway to a ‘new’ new whilst exploring locality through fabric sourcing. Can looking backwards become a new type of going forward?”

Your new skirt. A new beauty. A new conscious creation.

We received this message from a happy P2 maker last week - and it made our MONTH. Thank you so much to each and every one of you in our Pattern Project journey!

I wanted to write and say that I've just finished my P2 Pattern Project. It was an excellent project for me as I'm 75 and even though I've sewn, crocheted, embroidered, knitted etc, for all my family, I've never sewn anything for myself (well, apart from the odd apron, made out of spare fabric) so I'm really happy that after all this time, I've actually managed to indulge myself, with your help.

Many thanks for all your assistance, with the actual cutout fabric and printed paper instructions and also the really helpful videos. I can't wait to send a photo to my family WhatsApp group and show off..........

I'm beaming with satisfaction and pride at being a part of your revolution in clothing production.

Thank you so much.

Learn how to make your very own studio garment with deadstock, guided by .sagana (pictured) and .

The pioneering studio is renowned for creative experiments to make fashion sustainable and challenge every step of garment production.

The STRIPED series will be the studio’s first ever sew-it-yourself kit, intended to provide an exclusive insight into the designer’s signature usage of dead-stock textile and craftsmanship. The label, founded in 2011, creates pieces with close attention to detail and quality, rejecting mass-made or ‘fast’ fashion.

Launching this week as a sew it yourself kit, is the exclusive Striped Top, provided with a careful selection of deadstock fabrics.

We worked closely with the PE team to choose natural based fabrics with varying subtle texture differences that satisfy the visual and tactile senses. The fabrics work in combination to give a unique look.

All fabrics chosen were sourced from luxury second-hand suppliers, based in the UK and Europe, that allowed access to high-quality materials whilst fulfilling the aim of repurposing deadstock fabrics. The top will be available in black or white and composed to three different materials, which will vary for each kit.

Here is a little introduction to some of fabrics which will be available -

Shiny Triple Silk Organza (White) - A light-weight sheer fabric with a crisp handle, lustrous and a very distinctive feel.

Natural Canvas (White) -One of our own deadstocks from the studio, is this organic linen and cotton. It has slight a denser quality and softens over time after a few washes. It’s non-chemically treated natural fibres enhance the fabrics unique character as minor natural colour variations can reveal themselves. This fabric is a local one, supplied from no further than Lancashire. It’s a sturdy fabric, making it easy to sew, though not so forgiving to too many mistake due to linen weft’s tendency to fray easily.

Popeline De Coton Vintage (White) - A smooth and lightweight cotton, with a little transparency. Yet, it’s tightly woven plain weave gives it a durability. As you may have guessed by the name, the fabric was sourced from France, making not too a long travel journey into our studio. It’s flat surface and sturdiness makes it a super easy fabric to sew.

Launching next FRIDAY!

Phoebe English Studio’s first ever sewing kit a patchworked striped top made from deadstock.

The kit provides inspiring insight into the brand’s signature ethos, embracing a consciously considered and creative use of deadstock fabrics and craftsmanship to tackle the fashion industries negative environmental impacts.

The kit enables the maker to create a sustainable designer garment at home, with 8 easy to follow stages with the assistance of video sew-along demonstrations with the Phoebe English team. The pre-cut fabric pieces will be labelled with the carefully decided numerical order of the fabric stripes, allowing for a simplified experience of following the construction steps.

Pattern Project are proud to have collaborated with the PE team on the project that started 5 months ago to develop a kit sharing our own rich learnings from the project.

Ready to buy from next week.

Launching soon the striped skirt and top sew-it-yourself kit!

Our recent collaboration working with Phoebe English’s striped designs tasked us with fabric hunting deadstock materials in varying shades of whites, creams and blacks and with differing textures to satisfy the visual and tactile senses.

This proved to be a challenging but insightful activity. We reached out to many different deadstock fabric businesses to attain the diverse textures and colour variations of natural fibre based fabrics whilst also ensuring neither too little nor too much dead stock was ordered. Whilst this process took time, we have been able to learn and gain more experience of how best to handle a range of materials that bring with them different characteristics.

The most difficult fabrics that proved testing both for our cutting machine and seamstresses were the tencel and velvet. The tencel and the velvet both like to move around a lot and demand lots of tape, weights and pinning to hold in place whilst cutting and sewing. However, they can be forgiven as they have such a beautiful texture!

Our other selection of fabrics for the garments are more straightforward to sew and the sturdier fabrics will help hold the desired final shape of the garment.

Here in the studio we have been organising and weighing our abundance of offcuts-our heaviest bag weighing 9Kg. We’re determined to continue our pursuit of experimenting with different ways we can get to zero-waste.

So far, we have been inspired by our collaboration with Textile Designer who has helped us embrace using textile offcuts in their predetermined state by designing bags and cushions using our PP offcuts.

We are carrying on our exploration into various options where our waste can be taken care of with minimal harmful impact on our environment, including recycling and composting.
