No childcare? No problem 💕

A Ghanaian woman living in the UK has captured widespread admiration after presenting her PhD thesis while carrying her baby on her back due to a lack of childcare support.

Dr. Loretta Bortey Kubate was set to defend her PhD thesis, but on the day of the presentation, she couldn’t find anyone to look after her child. Her husband, who typically assists with childcare, was unavailable as he had an important engagement.

In a Facebook post, she shared that she made the bold decision to bring her baby along and carried the child on her back throughout her presentation.

Following her successful defence, Dr. Kubate was awarded the best PhD. thesis pitch. She used the moment to inspire fellow mothers by reflecting on the challenges of balancing motherhood and ambition, encouraging them to persist despite the difficulties.

In the social media post, Dr Loretta Bortey Kubate said, “Riddle riddle…What do you do when you have a baby to care for, and a project to pitch on the same day hubby has an exam to take on a foreign land with no family around? You tie him up and say, let’s do this, baby."”

Speaking of her subsequently winning the best PhD. thesis award after the presentation, she said, “…And this is how I won the best PhD thesis pitch award. This is how I showed up with my baby till I got the title Doctor added to my name.”

She used her situation to advise other mothers, “Like I have said many times, it will be hard, sometimes it seems impossible. Motherhood is the most reasonable excuse to abandon your dreams. But change the narrative. If you could go through hours of labour, there’s absolutely nothing you cannot do.”

A new study shows that a father's stress leaves lasting marks on his s***m — influencing the development of his offspring.

This new research, published in the journal Molecular Psychiatry, delves into the field of epigenetics, which explores how environmental factors can alter gene expression without changing the underlying DNA sequence.

These epigenetic changes can act as molecular switches, turning genes on or off and influencing various biological processes. Researchers analyzed s***m samples from 58 men, most in their late 30s to early 40s.

The study revealed that men who reported high levels of childhood stress had different epigenetic profiles in their s***m compared to those who reported lower stress. These differences persisted even after accounting for other factors like smoking and drinking, suggesting that childhood experiences can leave lasting epigenetic marks.

The researchers also found differences in a specific small noncoding RNA molecule previously linked to brain development in mice, as well as variations in DNA methylation patterns near genes involved in early brain development.
