Lots of laughs. Lots of blood. Lots of laundry. Chocolate swirl buttons in abundance. Smoke machine overload. Newfound pavlovian response to AC/DC. Sand everywhere. Heart aching for how much I love each one of the members in this company. Working on this project was an incredible experience and memory to treasure.

End of November found me in a new role as Wardrobe Manager for the Young Vic Theatre’s “Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo”.

My camera role was quickly filled with photos of blood bomb tests on costumes, ever-changing quick change set-ups, and videos of sand costume trials.

Three days of technical rehearsal became two weeks, and amidst the chaos, the emergency cast changes, illnesses and general theatrical mayhem, I witnessed a group of strangers become the most supportive, encouraging, and resilient team I have ever had the privilege of working with.

Press Night brought celebration and a breath of relief hoping that “the cursed show” had broken its streak of bad luck…

Back in November, the most lovely and talented Costume Designer Maariyah Sharjil asked if I’d whip up an apron for “Before the Millennium” at Old Fire Station Theatre in Oxford. As shown in pictures 2 to 5, I was sent some inspiration and two of the same dresses (slide 6) to create a pinafore apron to resemble a Woolworths employee uniform.

I had a lovely time creating this: from brainstorming how to use the existing garments I had to reshape, and use the inspiration photos and sketch to interpret how to make this sweet little dress.

Another, new learning experience, whether it was how to be more efficient with sewing time or there is a reason newer industrial sewing machine models have guards over the needle take up lever (see final pic for the permanent reminder).

And thank you to Alex Brenner for these fabulous shots to see this creation come to life onstage!

November saw a bittersweet farewell (for now) to Dressing in the Royal Ballet and Royal Opera alongside dear friends, with an interlude of crazy costume alterations in the beautiful National Ballet School building for Wicked Dubai Tour!
Thank you again to everyone I get to work with; for the laughs amid chaos of working backstage.

Ponies! Chickens! Ribbons! Oh my!

The cooler weather of October and November was swiftly forgotten at the Royal Ballet as we were all brought back to springtime for “La Fille Mal Gardée”. Loved working with the best tech, .koplick to dress the wonderful Ladies Soloists.

This season’s production of “The Magic Flute”, I was given the opportunity to dress the lovely and fabulous Kathryn Lewek, the Queen of the Night!! Hearing Mozart from the wings and witness Kathryn perform this famous aria will be unforgettable.

A special shoutout to my “Ladies”, thank you for the great dressing room chats and laughs pre-show.

I had the greatest pleasure dressing the character “Gertrudis” in the Royal Ballet’s production of “Like Water for Chocolate”. Thank you to my partner in crime (and hats) and to Mari, Hannah, Viola and Meaghan for being so lovely to work with, as always.

One of my many highlights of October was that I had the great pleasure of seeing a costume creation come to life (or, come off) onstage. Under the designing direction of .zaynab I made a rip off white tie suit for “Safe Space” at Chichester Festival Theatre.

I am so grateful that I got to attend press night and spend a couple hours in the beautiful town of Chichester.

Thank you Maariyah and Khadija for giving me this opportunity!!!
And thank you to all the knowledgeable costume makers on Facebook for sharing their wisdom on how to begin tackling a project such as this.

In September, I went on a fabulously adventurous road trip to Cardiff with the lovely to attend the Costume Symposium 2025. A three day conference and workshops at the beautiful Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama centring around historical costume, day to day life of different costume careers, networking with fellow costumers and learning new costuming skills!!

I chose the historical tailoring workshop, and spent the last two days under the tutelage of Gillian Carew, a very gifted tailor for Film and TV based in Dublin. The showcase on Sunday was so special to see the fruits of the other attendees’ labour!

It was so lovely being around others who wanted to cultivate their love for costume, and for being in the company of a dear friend in a beautiful part of Wales. One of my highlights was walking through Bute Park “on our way to class” and passing by Cardiff Castle.
