Shein isn’t just making cheap clothes—it’s making fashion more polluting than ever. In 2023 alone, the company pumped out 16.7 million tonnes of CO₂, a carbon footprint that has surged by 176% since 2021. Most of its clothing is made from polyester, meaning every wash releases countless microplastics into rivers and oceans. Investigations have also uncovered toxic levels of chemicals like lead in some products, raising serious health concerns.

With thousands of new styles uploaded daily, Shein fuels a cycle of overconsumption and disposable fashion. The result is more waste in landfills, more pollution in water systems, and more damage to the planet—all for the sake of a £5 top.

Interest in vintage Giorgio Armani pieces has surged following the designer’s death at the age of 91, with shoppers turning to second-hand outlets in search of his timeless styles.

Data from resale platforms showed a marked spike in activity on Thursday. Vinted reported that searches containing the word “Armani” were nearly three times higher than average, while The RealReal in the U.S. recorded a 212% increase in Armani searches compared with the previous day. Google Trends also noted a sharp rise in searches for “vintage Armani,” particularly in Italy and the UK.

On Vestiaire Collective, users listed archival Armani pieces for sale, including a 1990s silk blazer priced at £245 ($331) and a 2002 leather and rabbit fur jacket listed for £571 ($771).

Industry observers say demand could grow for Armani’s early suits from the 1970s and 1980s, especially amid the current trend for retro tailoring with wide trousers and fluid fabrics.

“Four or five years ago, these 80s style suits were impossible to sell. Now they are really in vogue, but impossible to find,” said Ammar Boulai, owner of Paris boutique Chez Ammar. “Armani produced a lot, across many sub-brands, so there must be plenty out there. Maybe people will open their drawers now.”

The surge highlights both Armani’s influence and the enduring appeal of his designs, as collectors and fashion fans alike look to preserve a piece of his legacy.
