The London based label run by designer/ stylist Wale Adeyemi has notched up a few landmark achievements in its 18 year history, but now begins a new chapter, launching its very first own-label store and gallery. Based in East London - Wale’s spiritual home – the new space will not be a homage to the designers eventful career – (stylist for the Beckhams, Creative Director for New Era, originator of

much copied screen print hoodies and caps) but rather it’ll focus on the future – with a new collection and a new generation of musicians, DJ’s, filmmakers and other visual artists coming in to the mix. One of the youngest people to be awarded an MBE - for services to fashion in 2008 - Wale is used to challenging expectations. As a brand B-side is a amalgamation of influences, often conflicting with the preconceived notions of streetwear; ‘Growing up I was inspired by all sorts of things – style-wise I loved American sports wear and workwear, but I also loved what was happening with hip hop clothing too. I loved British tailoring as well as the styles that just kept coming out of the underground UK club scene’, explains Wale. ‘B-side is about all those influences. I call it a street wear brand because to me all those things are part of streetwear – from Punk to skate, to hip hop – mixing all those elements up in fresh ways is what B-side has always been about’. What do Wale Adeyemi, Jimmy Choo & Jasper Conran all have in common?

As part of the 2001 Nokia Designer Collection, Nokia being the official mobile phone for London Fashion Week, the Nokia 8210 was chosen as the canvas for selected artists to bring to life their designs.

An extract from the associated pamphlet reads:

‘Daring to be different…

Is one way to describe the latest Nokia Designer Collection, Wale Adeyemi goes for the trademark graffiti style, while Guvinda uses catwalk photography and material swatches. There’s a gritty glittering British Bulldog look from Gabby Harris and stylish flower power from Jimmy Choo, while Clements Ribeiro stuns us with bold lightning strikes. Whatever your look see how some of the country’s top designers make fashion truly mobile.’

Items were sold via an online auction, in support of the Terrence Higgins Lighthouse Trust, and have now become extremely collectible pieces of fashion.
