In 2016, I wanted to understand where our household waste actually goes to in the UK. So, I visited a waste facility in Northwest London that turns our black bin waste into energy. 🔥

It was huge and actually quite stunning. I could not believe the movie set I’d walked into before reminding myself that this is our reality.

Feeling more of this vibe in 2023. 💀

THE BLUE JACKET (WINDOW TANK), 2022
102 x 93.5 cm (40.16 x 36.81 in)

Exposed seam tape and waterproof polyester are suspended between two reclaimed sash windows. Light surrounds the garment in the ‘tank’’, casting a halo. This is a garment so far processed from its natural material origins of oil, yet frequently worn by us on our hikes and rewarding ventures into the wilderness.

Sash windows (sourced in Leicestershire), upcycled Regatta Ltd jacket (labelled 100% polyester, Made in China), recycled label, thread, LED.

NEWS REPOST from ♻️

“Within the window tanks, discarded items of clothing are displayed – putting them on a literal and figurative pedestal in how they are viewed. To accompany the physical art pieces, Matthew has curated a soundscape and dedicated collection of scents, made in collaboration with creative perfumer Ezra-Lloyd Jackson. It’s these scent denominations that divide the exhibition into its respective parts: burnt window frames, fresh moss, canal water and damp concrete. Together, they immerse the viewer and bring the experience of ‘The Anthropologist’ to life.”
