In the editorial of See all this, The Body, founding editor Nicole Ex reflects on a decades-long encounter with Marlene Dumas: The South African-born painter has many accolades, her painting Miss January (1997), a portrait of a blonde woman n**e from the waist down, sold for $13.6 million at a Christie's auction, which set a new record for a living female artist and a he received a historic invitation to create a new work for permanent installation in the Louvre in Paris. What does it mean to think about the body in 2025?

In issue 42 of See All This kunstmagazine, Marlene Dumas opens the magazine with an essay that reads like an act of mourning and of resistance. ‘Any body there?’ begins with a sharp observation: ‘As this magazine is called See All This, I found myself thinking about how we use our eyes to see, almost forgetting that eyes are themselves body parts and, in a way, an entrance to the body!

Dumas gathers works where g***t sits next to laughter, and language next to politics. Featured in this short video: David Hammons’ Freudian Slip (1995), and Johan Grimonprez’s dial H-I-S-T-O-R-Y (1997), featuring footage of Rima Tannous Eissa, a Palestinian hijacker filmed at Tel Aviv Prison in May 1972.
