Imagine running rapids that haven't been seen in six decades and camping on beaches that didn't exist a mere few months earlier. Welcome to Cataract Canyon.

The muddy current of the Colorado River carries our rafts through the red rock walls of Cataract Canyon in southern Utah's Canyonlands National Park. The roar of a rapid grows louder somewhere downstream. Before we reach the tumultuous churn, the rafts pull up to a small white-sand beach. Beyond, the towering walls pull back to make room for a wide drainage, called a side canyon, where Gypsum Creek trundles in to the meet the river. We'll pitch our tents here, in this remote and wild spot, and sleep under the glittering stars before continuing on tomorrow.

Rafael Nadal's preparations for the Olympics continued with an impressive straight-set win over Britain's Cameron Norrie in the second round of the Swedish Open.

Nadal, 38, overcame the fifth seed in Bastad 6-4 6-4 to set up a quarter-final with Argentine Mariono Navone.

The Spaniard decided to miss Wimbledon to focus on the Olympics in Paris this summer - where he will play singles and doubles with Carlos Alcaraz.

Nadal, who is set to play in the doubles semi-final with Casper Ruud on Saturday, broke Norrie once in the first set to claim the lead.

Wimbledon singles champion Alfie Hewett will go for gold in Paris after being selected in a six-player wheelchair tennis ParalympicsGB squad for the 2024 Games.

Hewett, 26, is a three-time Paralympics silver medallist, having been a runner-up in men's singles and doubles at Rio 2016 and in doubles at Tokyo in 2021.

It is the only major title he is yet to win.

Gordon Reid, who has won 21 Grand Slams as Hewett's doubles partner, will join Hewett, Ben Bartram and Dahnon Ward in the men's singles and doubles at Roland Garros.

Hewett will head to France on a high after landing a first Wimbledon singles title, completing a career Grand Slam, while he and Reid lifted the doubles trophy at SW19 for the sixth time.

Feargal McCrory went out on his shield at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Washington DC as his brave bid to dethrone WBA super-featherweight champion Lamont Roach ended in the eighth round.

It was the big homecoming for the DC native, having got past Hector Luis Garcia last November to win the belt.

His maiden defence was designed to be a showcase and invitation for unifications, but he had to work for it as the county Tyrone man had his own ambitions and gave all he could in an effort to secure the upset.

Newcastle United have agreed a five-year deal with out-of-contract Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.

The 25-year-old joined Bournemouth from Bristol City for £13m in 2019, when current Magpies boss Eddie Howe was in charge of the Cherries.

Kelly can play as a left-back or left centre-half and bolsters Howe's defensive options after Newcastle missed out on Tosin Adarabioyo, who opted to join Chelsea from Fulham.

David Wilkie was an "extraordinary talent" and "one of Britain’s greatest ever athletes", says fellow Olympic gold medallist Duncan Goodhew.

Wilkie, who has died at the age of 70, won Olympic gold in the 200m breaststroke at the Montreal Games in 1976.

Actor Michael Sheen says the Welsh public must rise up and defend its cultural institutions to prevent an "unthinkable" end to the Welsh arts sector.

He listed funding cuts at Welsh National Opera, National Theatre Wales and Museum Wales as examples of "an attack on culture" in Wales.

His comments came ahead of the Welsh debut of the play Nye, in which Sheen portrays Welsh politician Aneurin Bevan, the architect of the NHS.

The BBC Natural History Unit's (NHU) The Green Planet boosted the country's economy by £7.4m, the broadcaster has revealed.

It also said the unit, based in Bristol, contributed to the city's economy as well as its "media boom".

Up to 44% of television production in the city was made by the NHU in 2022, driven by shows such as Planet Earth III, Frozen Planet II, Dynasties II, and Mammals.

A nine-year-old girl from County Fermanagh is starring as the lead character in a new CBeebies animation.

Nina He from Newtownbutler said she was "bouncing around the house" after finding out she had been chosen to be the voice of Yukee, a show introducing young children to music.

Her character plays the ukulele and goes on adventures with musical animals in a magical garden.

After a year in the studio, Nina said it was "pretty weird" to see on screen.
