Studio MASH Studio MASH is an architecture and design practice. Our projects are lovingly crafted and boldly transformative.

Low carbon retrofit is at the core of our diverse portfolio, whether of commercial spaces, historic buildings or private homes.

Our project on the north Norfolk coast reached practical completion at the end of 2025. Since then, our crafty hands-on clients have been gradually fitting out the house themselves.

It's been a joy to see how our sketches and suggestions are being interpreted and adapted to suit the clients DIY skills, the quirks of the site and the flashes of inspired input from the wider family.

Primary school can be pretty wild in lots of ways... But for central London schools, getting access to natural places that are even slightly wild is difficult.

Our Boutcher Forest School project combined architecture, art and landscape to help one Bermondsey school turn a neglected corner of their reception garden into a wild and inspiring place for year round learning and adventure.

These pics show one of the big moves from our masterplan. All along one boundary of the site – painted onto the plywood back of an advertising hoarding – an enormous mural by local artist extends the micro forest into a seemingly infinite magical woodland realm.

Set to be a highlight of MASH's 2026: our top to bottom refurbishment and extension of a semi-detached Victorian house a stone's throw from London Fields. We'll be turning a dark, cold and draughty house into a cosy, healthy, light filled dream home!

The material palette centres on breathable, low carbon and natural materials: stone, oak, wood fibre, lime.

Our Boutcher Forest School project was all about helping this inner London primary school get the most out of the small patch of green space that they have.

As part of a wider forest school masterplan, we designed a timber outdoor classroom, nestled amongst the trees in what was once a neglected corner of the site. This simple piece of architecture has enabled the school to run outdoor lessons throughout the autumn and winter, giving the children essential opportunities to connect with and learn from nature, sheltering under the curving canopy when the weather turns against them.

Sketches are piling up in the studio for the projects that are going to shape our 2026.

It's going to be another busy one: a coffee concept store in Manchester, two low energy retrofits\refurbs in Somerset, a top to bottom breathable low carbon retrofit and extension in Hackney, a phased strategic heritage retrofit in Oxford, a creative studio garden building in Sydenham and more work with a local school, amongst other exciting things (including team babies!)

The end of 2025 saw us wrapping up a few very special projects, which we'll be photographing in the spring when gardens have come back to life and the sun has begun to shine again. Excited to share those when the time comes.

A really fun day celebrating the opening of the Boutcher Primary School Forest! We were treated with a packed programme of amazing musical performances from the kids. In return Max gave them a lecture on the design development and ex*****on of the project...

If you scroll back on our grid you'll see our 2023 masterplan drawing for the project (being forensically analysed in pic 2) , which has transformed a neglected corner of the school grounds into a luscious and magical micro-forest, rich with opportunities for discovery and adventure.

Alongside managing the wider project we designed a forest classroom, which stands as a focal point with a single huge table under a canopy that a whole class of children can gather around at any time of year.

This project has been a true collaborative effort and a real joy to be involved with over the last couple of years.

Our timber, polycarbonate and corten barn in Guernsey has been shortlisted for AJ Small Projects 2025.

This pic was taken the week the larch cladding from was fitted. Warm and bright against the crisp blue Guernsey sky.

The repeating timber battens wrap around all four sides of the building, protecting the polycarbonate sheets beneath and filtering daylight into the interior. They also provide a continuous, homogenous skin that conceals the range of fixed, sliding and hinged wall sections beneath.

There's still time to vote for us in the Readers Poll for the awards. See the link in our bio.

On Thursday afternoon we'll be presenting La Grange to the judges of the AJ Small Projects awards. In preparation, we've been digging back through the file hunting for photos and sketches. We'll be sharing a couple of things we've found this week.

This pic by captures one of our favourite details on the project - the way the timber cladding is capped off by the ultra slim edge of the curved corten roof panels.

A real trip down memory lane seeing this for sale on recently. This was one of our first completed residential refurbishment projects way back in 2018. Like all our projects back then, the budget was low, the timescales were tight and our amazing clients had to take a bit of a leap of faith with us as a young and unknown practice.

The clients nailed the paint colours back then and have gradually filled the place with plants, paintings and vintage furniture. And a piano! Looking great in the evening light.
