Stumbled upon Casa Saldarini (1962) or “the whale”, designed by architect Vittorio Giorgini. Constructed in mesh and concrete and inspired by the shapes of nature, it is one of the first modern examples of blob architecture.

In a strange time of social distancing behaviours across our planet, we contend with the conflicting tension between our public and private bodies — social and physical spaces in urban spaces. Isolation. Social surveillance. Public conformity. .
A part of our “ETI-KIT” series designed in 2014, AROM is a speculative design exploration on the packaging of social etiquette and communication in public spaces. AROM is a customisable, scented scarf that protects you from others in tight closed spaces with the choice of your branded fragrance that becomes a part of your fashion identity construction. .
“ETI-KIT” was designed to provide solutions for maintaining privacy in public spaces, in the most polite way possible. The investigation revolves around how people in these scenarios engage with wearable objects and clothing, not only as physical protection, but also as social discourse to cope with identity.
Social constructs force individuals to curate their “public bodies”, and social order subconsciously governs the way our bodies respond. Since this governing scale is fluid and not quantitative, this measurement of value is understood by abiding to the masses through observation and experience. Without this invisible governance, or social surveillance, we would curate our bodies with no scale. To address this tension, we privatise our bodies by building inwards, rather than outwards. In this scenario, our acts of social protection become the packaging ourselves.

Taking inspiration from the design brief by Bee Breeders - we imagined a creative retreat environment for poetry writers.
Our questions arose from trying to understand what creates writer’s block. At what moments in our lives do we find an outlet of freedom that does not bear the weight of expectations, but instead the empathy and kindness to whatever identity within us hibernate? What are the conditions in which this environment can breed and foster the creativity necessary for linguistic expression?
If we look at the structure of poetry, we find that it is freeform, built with rhythm but with no conventional scaffolding of sentence structure and grammatics.
Our Poet Huts design is a small but expansive, meditative space that is organic and flexible, where ideas can flow like water. Inspired by sailboats and Japanese sliding doors, the open walls become channels that dictate the intimacy of the spaces, allowing the user to create temporary autonomy over its ownership when inhabiting it. Transient spaces for creative retreats should foster the bliss of curiosity, trust, and innocent ignorance that is endowed upon us when we explore into the unknown.

Sometimes form is found in what is not discovered yet. In essence, they are entropic - the inclination towards chaos. The drapes of canvas over an unfinished building is a marriage of both our worlds together. The softness and malleability of fabric contrasted with the rigid structure of concrete opens up to a world of undiscovered forms. Just one of the many reasons why Tangenym loves the collision of worlds between architecture and fashion!

the Monumental Cemetery of Staglieno in Genoa on All Saints Day. Designed by Carlo Barabino in 1835 and inaugurated by 1851, the Neo-Classical style galleries house hundreds of monuments and thousands of important graves with sculptures dedicated to people and servicemen from the region. The cemetery is one of the largest in Europe, covering an area of more than 1 square kilometer. Frequented by Friedrich Nietzsche and described by Mark Twain in the words “We shall continue to remember it after we shall have forgotten the palaces..”, the memorial is both a moving tribute and a space that signifies the fragile lines between immortality and mortality. .

Remember remember on a snowy 5th of a March, I had the pleasure of speaking with a beloved Canadian architect, Douglas Cardinal. He quotes “What kind of architecture can truly express who we are as people?” In the realm of architecture, where spaces are viewed most commonly through shapes and forms, the question of relevance in how we occupy them can sometimes be lost. The most memorable piece from this moment for us, is the ever growing relevancy of architecture and the built environment in society today. How should we look at it today? Are we users that prefer to have routine spaces imposed on us? Or are we users that become engaged in defining our spaces?

This weather has us dreaming of the beautiful home we stayed at in the Azores over the summer, which repurposed old sails as tent shades over the terrace garden.

Can garments ever look like “sexy furniture”? The theory "form follows function" is one of the most important cores of Bauhaus. This theory was most influential and heavily practiced in the field of modern furniture design, and Bauhaus furniture was the preamble of modernism and functionalism. .
In this collection, rigid, geometric and clean lines inspired by modern furniture, contrast the flexible, fluid and sensual language of fabric on the human body. Primitive garment closures inspired by modular wood joints act as the only ornamental finishings to the garments, furthering the "form follows function" theory. .
The harmony between the function of an object and its design, is disrupted by disharmony of discomfort and restriction of movement by the wearer (most particularly seen in the red "Guillotine” dress). The modernist question about the relationship between usefulness and beauty is reignited again, and we become once again uncertain about what it means to find the practical purpose of formal beauty in commonplace objects. .
"Modular" was inspired by our own frustrations between the rules of applying design theory and the freedom of expressive creativity. The goal was to use the medium of fashion to communicate the power of design identity through the female lens, in a serious -- but not so serious -- form. .
