This is one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to write, but I need to share what happened to my husband.
We didn’t know what sepsis was. We didn’t know how silently it could take hold and how deadly it could be. Neither did he. I’m telling our story because I don’t want anyone else to go through what we did, blindsided by something so dangerous.
Sepsis is ruthless. It can strike anyone, and it moves faster than you’d ever imagine. I beg you to learn its signs, fever, confusion, severe pain, shortness of breath. Recognize them and act. We were helpless because we didn’t know, and the hospital missed it until it was too late which we believe led to his passing.
My husband fought with everything he had. I was by his side for five agonizing days in ICU. He endured multiple organ failure, a heart attack, and acute respiratory distress (ARD). It’s said that no one can survive those five days in that condition, but he held on, for us, for as long as he could. On his last day, he had tears in his eyes. He could still hear me, still feel my hand holding his, and even though his body was failing, his love never did. His strength, his will, everything he had went into fighting to stay with us.
I am so proud of him, and I ache every day for the battle he lost. Sepsis took him, and it took a part of us with it.

Your messages gave me strength when I needed it most, and I felt like he was still with me through your kindness.
