Extensions of self is the upcoming exhibition unpacking how AI relates to us as humans seen through 11 different co-creative lenses. The group of exhibitors is fantastic. This is happening at Ars Electronica and opening Sept 5th. The insanely inspiring (using strong words here) whom I previously featured on will also be there. Thank you putting this on my radar 👁️🙏🏻

How does artificial intelligence relate to us humans? 🤖

The exhibition "Extensions of Self" negotiates, via eleven international positions, how artificial intelligence relates to us humans, whether we understand its underlying systems and logic, and what about our authorship. 👀

The exhibition not only shows processes of co-creative art-making between humans and machines, but also questions the influence we already grant the tools when it comes to defining our individual identity. This raises the question of whether algorithms and AI programs further cement social structures and inequalities, or whether they can potentially help us discover new and layered definitions of "normality" or "beauty."

The title of the exhibition "Extensions of Self" refers to a conversation between artist Stephanie Dinkins and the Black social robot Bina48, who asks her if robots should be considered an extension of human existence. What are the inherent rights of a chatbot like Bina48 and why should it have them or not? 👾

Out in the world the past few days connecting with inspiring people making a difference, doing important work and an absolute pleasure to be around.

So good to finally meet irl today with , of course with the best kind of unplanned colour matching 🔵🌎🈳🚎🐟 💙

The good part of last Friday was spent with and their amazing Summer 2023 trainees who blew the panel away with their presentations championing fashion action against climate change. I can’t begin to explain how brilliant the group who averaged 18 years old are. Thank you to cofounders Amelia Akanni Nishy Lal and Giulia Bottari for bringing me on board.

Join me and tomorrow June 27th to learn about speculative design, one of the most transformative practices I have used in over a decade of being a Futurist and future trend forecaster.

This emerging practice needs to be implemented by all foresight practitioners and designers when visioning the future.

It’s overlooked because it requires using other creative muscles and we are so he’ll bent on data. But creative foresight remains the most ethical and effective way to create a preferable future and map out scenarios.

I am facilitating this session and will take you through a few case studies and then we will jump into a practice activity to unlock learning.

This will also be based on my own experience using speculative design with organisations ranging from Dazed Beauty, Boston Consulting Group and Plurality University.

Living in an age where we outsource our likeness to AI systems implies identity becomes the new breed of raw materials.

We as humans, our appearance, unique markers, voice, skin, style, body language are the new thing to extract and mine for the digital realm. Much easier than cloning us in a lab. Much more scalable too.

I’ve been reusing fabrics to update some of my damaged and much loved clothing.

From past projects I also had a collections of fabric scraps I assembled together into a bag concept by textile artist
for

The first photo was taken by my good friend Sophie of me working on her very handy big work/ dining table. However you don’t need a large table space. I often use my floor for this type of project.

Then I fixed the tip of my Nike Reacts which had ripped at the front due to my pointy 👣 with some darker grey mesh which adds some additional texture.

My old worn out black dunks needed a spruce too so I created my own perforated grey label tab and have been experimenting with show tie colours. Channeling my inner P***y Brewster.

Finally I gave the military trench I stole from my mother an update too. It had some permanent stains so I covered those with patches I had designed a while back for my project

I’ve got a few more things in the works that feel a bit more ambitious but this was a good warm up for now.

Today travel with me to 2050 in an immersive auditory experience. You're about to listen to a world of imagination but not fantasy: Climate Vision 2050.

Climate Vision 2050 is a podcast taping into the practice of speculative design. Through a compelling human narrative and evocative audio, each episode transports listeners into fashion, agriculture, fishing, shipping, urbanism in 2050.

Created by BCG, a global consulting agency committed to climate and sustainability action, I am excited to share with you the episode I contributed to for Climate Vision 2050:

🍃 Green is the New Black 🕴️

Join me in 2050. I am a fashion designer who studied systems thinking, a requirement at all fashion schools. Today every garment… I'll stop here, as I am not the only protagonist in this future. You’ll have to listen to the experiential piece to find out more.

My role for the Green is the New Black episode was to:
👁️ Provide insights during an in depth questionnaire, which informed the scenario.
👁️ During a 1 hour interview weave these future insights inside a dynamic narration of my future self and context.
👁️ Collapse this narrative into an altered future, a lived experience where I speak as if I were the same age as I am today, but in 2050.

From listening to the final outcome yesterday, I was transported and hope you will too!

With Biomolecular Scientist x Material Futures designer 🥼🍄🧪Jesse Adler and my Co conspirator

Jesse works at the intersection of science, design and sustainable innovation 🌿

Jesse works as a Materials Innovation Researcher at PANGAIA, is a biomolecular scientist (University of Michigan) and recently graduated from the MA Material Futures at Central Saint Martins.

She created Alchemical Mycology and a makeup collection using the pigments extracted from mushrooms, lichens, yeast and mould.

By collaborating with fungi she is challenging our relationship with colour as it intersects beauty, health, and the environment, while valorising fungi and their chemical extracts.

Extracting pigments from fungi (mushrooms, lichens, yeasts, and moulds) as sustainable colourants can reduce (or replace) our dependence on non-renewable sources of colour (like fossil fuels and mined minerals) .

We will be together for 30 minutes discussing Biomolecular Science, Material Innovation & Interdisciplinary Design. Find out more by joining shortly!
