To make a crop top with elastic at the neck, underbust, and sleeves, first cut a rectangular or slightly shaped body piece and separate sleeve pieces from stretchy fabric to your desired measurements. Sew the side seams and attach the sleeves, then create casings (or stretch and zigzag-stitch the elastic directly) along the neckline, underbust, and sleeve hems before inserting and securing the elastic so it gathers the fabric evenly. Finish by hemming the bottom edge and checking the fit.

Next, attach the prepared collar (or collar + stand assembly) to the shirt’s neckline by pinning it right sides together, matching the center back, shoulder seams, and front notches. Stitch along the neckline seam allowance 1 cm grade the seams if needed, and press.

Alternatively, for reversible styles, use binding or a flat-felled approach: sew with wrong sides together, trim one allowance, fold the wider one over it, and topstitch neatly so both sides look finished. Ease the sleeve cap gently as you pin and sew to avoid puckers.

2. For a reversible/clean-finish seam (e.g., French seam): Trim the seam allowance to about 0.5 cm fold the fabric wrong sides together so the raw edges are enclosed inside, then stitch again 1 cm from the fold to fully encase the raw edges. This creates a neat seam on both the inside and outside.
3. For machine neatening: After pressing the seam open, finish each raw edge separately with a zigzag stitch, overlock (serger), or clean-finish stitch on your machine, then press the allowances toward the back.

Start by pressing the right front edge: fold it under by about 3 cm to the wrong side, then fold it again to create a clean placket width, and press firmly. This folded edge usually doesn’t need topstitching, as the buttons will secure the layers.
Next, mark button positions evenly along the center of this placket (starting from the top, spaced every 8 cm). Sew the buttons on securely by hand or machine once the shirt is otherwise assembled.
