Little and large mannequins. I've had the full sized mannequin since my days at uni. I have draped many, many looks on her and she continues to be integral to my creative process but as I endeavour to become more sustainable, I bought Gerty, the half scale mannequin. By her measurements, she's 50% smaller than the original but she's tiny and will be how I create more designs without wasting materials. I've made a couple of dresses using Gerty so far and people thought they were dresses for babies. I had fun explaining that I wouldn't design corseted strapless dresses for babies...but I'll be using her more and more as I reestablish my creative voice. Get ready to be sick of her.

Dhaara's bridal outfit remains one of my favourite's to this day. It's an embodiment of what I see as a beautiful melding of tradition and modernity. It was designed around using a vintage cotton bandhani sari for the blouse and lengha but it was all brought together by using layers of brocade, lamé and raw silk with custom designed embroidery. When I make lengha's, this is how I chose to do it.

There's something about this outfit that will always get me. It's probably the pearl beading that covers the entire top of the skirt. When Dhara came to me, she was looking for something she hadn't been able to find ready made, Something that was a perfect representation of her. This look is the complete opposite of the look I designed for her traditional ceremony but it was the perfectly light outfit to dance the night away in. ..

New era = more creativity. As I find my love for painting again, I was adamant in finding a way to incorporate it into my designs. I've worked on a few pieces so far but am still finishing them up so for now, here's a little sneak peak at a muslin piece I worked on for the summer weather...

Things that make my heart sing. As I gear up for what I can only describe as a relaunch of Sejal Anujah Shah following a few difficult years, I am working to get the atelier into shape and this board was something I had wanted to put together for years. I even painted it to match the faux lime wash walls. Who doesn't love a bit of colour co-ordination?!..

I've never considered myself a typically Asian designer. Everything I have created in the past was always designed with a modern, more Western twist because it was as great a representation on me as a person and designer as I felt comfortable putting out there. As I pivot into this new era of Sejal Anujah Shah these are the designs I will never forget. The incredible clients who saw something different and chose to trust me to bring their visions to life. Kajal's outfit incorporated embroidered elements of the sun, moon, stars and both her and her husband's zodiac signs to represent their interests and Kajal's career in science...

There's something about quilting that screams the cold it coming but I had to put my own twist on it. Swipe to see the process of how I stitched this Indian art inspired skirt without ruining the fabric 👀..

The basics. In an age where so many people are operating fashion brands through tech, I love the connection that is built using the traditional techniques. At the moment, I am the sole person making each order. I draft the patterns, stitch the toiles, design the embroidery and meticulously make the final pieces. It's a true labour of love but I build friendships with so many of my clients and I wouldn't have it any other way. ..

Wishing this gorgeous couple a happy anniversary! I can’t believe it’s been 3 years. This look has to be the epitome of subtle elegance. It weighs a fair amount but look at that skirt…worth every gram. As I’ve done a number of times since, the groom Kishen’s shawl was made to colour match Saheli’s outfit but embroidered with the same border as his sherwani.

Taking a trip down memory lane with my first ever bridal lengha. Jeneen came to be knowing that she wanted something different for her wedding. We went with a peach-skin fabric with an almost suede like touch and embroidery that was inspired by some of her mums traditional pieces. Fun fact, almost 7 years later, Jeneen and her mum have both come back to me to have outfits made for her brothers wedding!

This has to be one of my favourite bits of embroidery for the OG Sejal Anujah Shah collection, all those years ago. I’ve always said that timeless is my trend. None of these temporary fads, just something chic and elegant that will last in your wardrobe for years to come 🤍🪩
