Kaoriyatsumoto Indigo Shibori dye (藍染め/絞り染め) & Upcycling Kimono/obi apparel in London - Tradition meets contemporary

14/07/2026

Tokushima is the heart of sukumo (traditional Japanese indigo compost) production, and I had the pleasure of visiting Makiko-san there last summer.

I can’t wait to learn more shibori techniques from her and put my hands in traditional Japanese indigo vat with Sukumo next month! 💙

The area where she’s based is incredibly peaceful and beautiful—a place that truly stays with you. If you ever have the chance to visit Tokushima, I highly recommend it. ✨

Had the honour of creating a custom Shibori indigo dye for a white cotton top by for . 💙🙏🏼

The fabric was incredibly delicate, so I have to admit I was a little nervous—but it turned out beautifully. 💙✨

There’s something so special about giving a beautiful garment a second life. 🫶

Thank you, , for trusting me with this piece and for the opportunity. 🙏🏼

Back to Arimatsu soon! 💙🇯🇵

This will be my fourth year returning to this beautiful historic town to learn another special Shibori technique with Shibori master Murase-san at . Every visit deepens my appreciation for this incredible craft and the people who keep it alive.

Arimatsu, a historic district in Nagoya, is the birthplace of Arimatsu Shibori, a traditional textile art with over 100 intricate resist-dyeing techniques. During the Edo period, the town flourished by selling its beautifully handcrafted textiles to travelers along the historic Tōkaidō route. Today, Arimatsu continues to preserve this rich cultural heritage through artisan workshops, museums, and hands-on dyeing experiences.

After Arimatsu, I’ll be heading to Tokushima! 🙌🏼

I can’t wait to share this year’s journey, inspiration, and beautiful discoveries with you. 💙💙

A huge shoutout to Sonoe-san , her family, and all the friends who worked so hard to organise the event and make everything run so smoothly. Thank you so much! 🙏🏼✨

I’m so happy that many of the linen shirts and organic cotton tees found new homes! I’ll be adding the remaining pieces to my website soon, so if you missed out this time, keep an eye out. 🌿

My next event is currently the Shotengai Market in September, but if you’d like to host a workshop before I head away for the summer holidays, please send me a message. I’d love to hear from you! ☀️💙
